Sultan Knish: "Why Left Wing Anti-Zionism is Anti-Semitism"

In a clear demonstration of just how "progressive" they really are, the Anti-Israel left is hard at working trying to revive the medieval blood libel. First the Swedish daily Aftonbladet repeated Palestinian Arab propaganda about medically impossible organ thefts, and then the left wing Counterpunch magazine run by Saddam supporter Alexander Cockburn printed an article actually using medieval blood libels against Jews as proof. There is something striking about an Anti-Semitic radicalization on the left so extreme that after being accused of using organ thefts as a modern day blood libel, it actually tries to revive and legitimize medieval blood libels. Ever heard of the freedom to print blood libel?

Honest Reporting: "Swedish Blood Libel: The Aftermath - A roundup of commentary on Aftonbladet's organ harvesting outrage"

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet's story (translated into English in full here) accusing the IDF of harvesting Palestinian organs caused an uproar. Following its publication, we tracked hundreds of your e-mails to Aftonbladet Editor in Chief Jan Helin, who was certainly left in no doubt as to the depth of anger that his decision to publish an unsubstantiated blood libel had generated.

Donald Bostrom, the author of the offensive piece, duly demonstrated his utter lack of any basic journalistic standards when he said: "But whether it's true or not - I have no idea, I have no clue." On top of this, the story was further undermined as one of the Palestinian families interviewed said they never told any reporter that their son was missing organs.

Rather than acknowledging a case of shoddy, not to mention offensive journalism, Aftonbladet and even the Swedish government turned the issue into one of freedom of speech, as the situation escalated into a full blown spat between the Israeli and Swedish governments. (...) >>>

PJM: "Oliphant does us a favor", by Roger Simon

Deliberately or not, he he has dropped the oldest of phony Leftist pretenses - that anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism are not the same. The poor, diminutive woman and child of Gaza in his cartoon are being eaten alive by a rapacious Jewish star, not by the flag of Israel. It is the religion or ethnic group (you decide), not the state - Jews, not Israelis - performing this supposedly horrific act. Well, thank you, Oliphant, you racial primitive you. You let the cat out of the bag we always knew was in there. And you did it in the pages of theWashington Post.

(...) getting through to, the Oliphant’s of the world - reminding them that it was the Israelis who voluntarily left Gaza only to have their townsbombarded month after month, that Gaza is ruled by a regime of religious fanatics who are pathologically misogynistic and homophobic and believe the entire globe should be Islamic, etc., etc. - is hopeless. Oliphant and company are unreachable, permanently reified. It is all depressing beyond words. (...) Durban I, only a few short months before 9/11, was an orgy of anti-Semitism, sponsored by the UN. This time effort has been put in by the UN organizers to make it not as overt, cleansing the superificial racism from the language while still ratifying the original Durban I document which branded Israel an apartheid state (...) The EU Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia (taken over since March 1,2007 by the EU FRA - Fundamental Rights Agency in Vienna) "Working Definition" on Anti-Semitism clearly specifies such comments as anti-semitic. The culprit is the "Sinn Fein" Party spokesperson on "Justice, Equality and International Affairs". They were actively working with the Nazis, and with the 10 Nazi agents landed in Ireland, in WW II, all of whom were captured, and each year the Party publicly honours the "IRA Chief-of-Staff" Sean Russell, 47, who bombed England in 1939, before WW II started, murdering 7 civilians, and who died on a Nazi submarine on his way to Ireland, on Aug 14, 1940 off the Galway coast. Over 900 people were slaughtered in Belfast City and Derry City by Nazi bombing in April-May, 1941, guided by local IRA, including the late father of current "SF" President Gerry Adams, from Belfast, and another 29 people were murdered in Dublin City ... Hat Tip: Tom Carew

The Sinn Fein justice, equality and international affairs spokesman accused Ambassador Zion Evrony and Fine Gael’s Alan Shatter of indefensible attempts to justify the Israeli bombing campaign. The Spectator: "The terrible warning of a Holocaust survivor", by Douglas Davis

At my dinner table on Friday night, a holocaust survivor admits that she is trying to persuade her son to take his family out of Europe to America, Canada, Australia, Canada, Australia, Israel... (...) As tens of thousands of demonstrators march through the streets of Europe, the chants are modified but the message remains substantially intact: ‘Hamas, Hamas, Hamas — Jews to the Gas’. Or, more simply: ‘Death to the Jews’. Many European Jews, even well-established, affluent Jews, have been checking the suitcase they keep packed under the bed. (...) A hundred yards from my front door, I encounter the slogan, freshly painted in yellow, across the pavement: ‘Kill the Filthy Jews’. I am shocked. And shocked that I am shocked. (...) anti-Israel protesters insisted they were motivated by political animus against Zionism rather than racial prejudice against Jews.

The Hamas Charter, which sets out of the guiding principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement — xenophobic, racist and anti-Semitic — removes the distinction. (...) Article Seven of the Charter provides the religious justification: ‘The Prophet, prayer and peace be upon him, said: “The [end of days] will not come until Muslims fight the Jews and kill them; until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: ‘Oh Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him!’”’ (...) There can be no doubt that, for many, Israel-hatred is a cover for Jew-hatred. There can also be no doubt that this figleaf is becoming redundant. The contagion has passed through the membrane and the post-Holocaust taboo against open expressions of anti-Semitism is slipping away. (...) PJM: "The Stupidity of Equating Anti-Semitism with ‘Islamaphobia’", by John Rosenthal
“Conceptions of the Muslim as Enemy — Conceptions of the Jew as Enemy.” This was the title of a conference held on December 8 at Berlin’s Center for Research on Anti-Semitism. The stated aim of the conference was to employ the template of anti-Semitism in order to analyze an allegedly new form of kindred prejudice: “Islamophobia.” The announcement of the conference sparked a raging controversy in Germany. (...)

Broder observed
: Of course, you can compare everything and anything. You can compare Cologne to a city, the [German media prize] the Bambi with the Oscar, a currywurst with a delicacy, or even academic “Anti-Semitism experts” with bean-counters. But to mention anti-Semitism in the same breath as Islamophobia is as off-base as talk of “chicken concentration camps” to refer to ordinary chicken farms (...) “glucodermaphobia” — fear of the film that forms on warm milk when it is left standing for too long. Persons who suffer from phobias avoid what they fear. They don’t take the elevator, don’t go out onto public spaces, and steer clear of reptiles. An anti-Semite, on the other hand, feels compelled to seek contact with the object of his aversion. Anti-Semitism is not a phobia, but rather a kind of psychotic obsession. … The director of a Center for Research on Anti-Semitism ought to know that. … (...)

The extension of the Berlin center’s research activities to cover other groups that were subject to persecution on racial grounds by Nazi Germany makes perfect sense in this connection. This is most obviously the case with respect to Sinti and Roma (”Gypsies”), hundreds of thousands of whom died in Nazi concentration camps during WWII. The extension to Muslims, however, makes no sense whatsoever. As has long been known and as recent academic research has documented in great detail, far from being the object of Nazi persecution, Muslims were courted by the Nazis as natural allies in a supposedly common struggle against “Jewish domination” and Anglo-American “imperialism.” (On the specific example of the Mufti of Jerusalem, see my recent book review “The Mufti and the Holocaust”.) (...)

The clear suggestion is that “Islamophobia” is, in effect, nothing less than the new form of anti-Semitism (...) to treat September 11, 2001 as just some date that for no apparent reason happens to mark the rise of anti-Islamic “resentments” — is to coquette with negationism vis-à-vis Islamic extremist violence and the tens of thousands of victims it has claimed. (...) It is, above all, this remarkable indifference to the reality of Islamic extremism that renders the Berlin center’s comparison of anti-Semitism and “Islamophobia” so outrageous. There was no “Jewish” 9/11, nor were there any Jewish Bali bombings or Mumbai attacks and so on. The basis of the eliminationist anti-Semitism that led to the Holocaust was a myth of Jewish world conspiracy.

Al-Qaeda and affiliated groups that attempt to establish their conception of Islamic rule by means of violence are no myth. (Or perhaps Wolfgang Benz and his fellow “prejudice researchers” believe they are?) The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the founding text of the myth of Jewish “world conspiracy,” was a forgery whose global influence (as the French historian Henri Rollin has shown) derived in no small measure from its conscious dissemination by agents of German propaganda. It was, moreover, alleged to be a “secret document” that had to be “discovered.” The fundamental texts of the Islamist movement — from Sayyid Qutb’s Milestones to Osama bin Laden’s “World Islamic Front Statement for Jihad against Jews and Crusaders” — are authentic and are widely and eagerly disseminated by Islamist organizations themselves. There is nothing “secretive” or conspiratorial about them. (...) >>>

Jewcy: "Understanding the Islam in Islamic Antisemitism", by Andrew G. Bostom (in 3 parts) - FEATURE - ASSIGNED READING

Recently Jewcy posted a short opinion piece "On Islamic Antisemitism" which consisted almost entirely of extracts from brief, superficial works on the subject by Bernard Lewis, Daniel Pipes, Robert Wistrich, and Efraim Karsh--none of whom, despite their other areas of expertise, have ever studied Islamic Antisemitism in a serious, comprehensive manner. The glib conceptions of these authors--which are simply affirmed without ever giving any substantive proofs (perhaps because the relevant doctrinal and historical data provides negative proofs), and repeated verbatim and uncritically in the posting by Michael Ezra--remind me, as a clinical investigator in medicine, of a scene from Woody Allen's film "Sleeper." Sultan Knish: "Socialism and Anti-Semitism"

Hugo Chavez's "Jewish Problem" demonstrates that leftist antisemitism has very little to do with the existence of Israel or any so-called oppression of the Palestinian Arabs. The Marxist and leftist hatred for Jews long predates the modern State of Israel. In fact it goes back to Marx himself, who despite having Jewish ancestry, hated Jews all the more. When Marx wrote, "Money is the jealous god of Israel, beside which no other god may exist... The Jew has emancipated himself in a Jewish manner, not only because he has acquired financial power, but also because, through him and also apart from him, money has become a world power and the practical Jewish spirit has become the practical spirit of the Christian nations. The Jews have emancipated themselves insofar as the Christians have become Jews", he was setting forth the antisemitic viewpoint of Marxism that continues to this day. (...) Jews are simply an embarrassment for the prophets of socialism, because Jews disprove its fondest premise, that only government control can insure equality and justice. (...) Socialists traffic in antisemitism, not because of Israel, but because they resent Jews and because it is a cheap source of bigoted populism (...) Leftist antisemitism is not a Jewish burden, it is the socialist burden. It is driven by the socialist distaste for the individual, for individual accomplishment and striving, out of tune with the collective. For that is what Jews ultimately are. The madness of socialism is the madness of crowds, of a great voice howling at a mob and pointing a well manicured finger at a Jew and proclaiming, "There is your enemy." (...) >>>

... the pomo variant, anti-Zionism...

Pajamas: "Anti-Semitism Without Anti-Semites," by Henryk Broder

Last month, the Domestic Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag held public hearings on anti-Semitism in Germany. Many of the speakers chose to focus on the “classical” anti-Semitism to be found in what in Germany are euphemistically called “right-wing extremist” milieus, i.e., among skinheads and self-avowed neo-Nazis. The journalist Henryk Broder, however, located the problem elsewhere: namely, in the mainstream “anti-Zionist anti-Semitism” to be found, for instance, among academics … and Bundestag members. Pajamas Media here presents a complete English translation of Henryk Broder’s statement to the Bundestag’s Domestic Affairs Committee. "(...) prejudices — literally “pre-judgments” [Vorurteile] — are harmless. I have prejudices, you have prejudices: everyone does. It is only negative prejudices that bother us. (...) The distinction between a prejudice and a resentment is as follows: a prejudice concerns a person’s behavior; a resentment concerns that person’s very existence. Anti-Semitism is a resentment. The anti-Semite does not begrudge the Jew how he is or what he does, but that he is at all. (...) Like all social phenomena, anti-Semitism is susceptible to transformation. (...) The modern anti-Semite (...) does not have a shaved head. He has good manners and often an academic title as well. He mourns for the Jews who died in the Holocaust. (...) But at the same time he militates for the right of Iran to have atomic weapons. For “how can one deny Iran what one has permitted Israel or Pakistan?” as Norman Paech [the foreign policy spokesperson of the German Left Party] has put it. Or he inverts the causal relationship and claims that it is Israel that is threatening Iran and not vice-versa — as [German Middle East scholar] Dr. Udo Steinbach did in a recent radio interview. (...) He is not bothered by what Israel does or does not do, but rather by the fact that Israel exists. (...) >>>

The UN has appointed a man to investigate Israel’s behaviour who is incapable of telling the difference between genocide and the attempt to defend a people from becoming its victims, and accuses those defenders instead of being the perpetrators of genocide despite the demonstrable evidence to the contrary. Professor Richard Falk, the UN Human Rights Council special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories (whose remit, however, will not include reporting on the Palestinians!) has compared Israel’s behaviour in Gaza to the Nazis. The virulent malice towards Israel openly displayed by both the terms of Falk’s appointment and the prejudice of the man himself is but the latest illustration of the UN’s true character as a club of tyranny. Its amusingly named Human Rights Council, after all, was responsible for the frenzied hate-fest against Israel and the Jews in its grotesquely named World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance which it staged in Durban a few days before 9/11, and which demonised Israel as a Nazi and apartheid state, promoted Holocaust denial and used images of anti-Jewish hatred straight out of the Nazi lexicon (and is to have a threatened sequel, Durban II, next year to implement this vile agenda). The Greek Riots: Anomic Youths, Headless Government

By Cornelia Tsakiridou

Greece is a country that takes great pride in its long history and rightly so. But it is also a nation where myths crafted over centuries rule unchallenged. The December 6, 2008 death in Athens of 15-year-old Alexandros Gregoropoulos by police fire triggered riots and mayhem throughout the country and caused protests in some of its embassies and consulates abroad.

As the riots continue, three myths are dominating public perception: that those in positions of authority cannot be trusted; that the rebellious and poor have a monopoly on justice; and that problems facing the nation are caused by obscure international enemies and their domestic operatives.

With banks, police stations, and businesses burned to the ground, Molotov bombs on steady supply, and banner-carrying students, many underage, claiming revolutionary authority--e.g., forcing their way into a national TV station (NET), the chairman of which, Christos Panagopoulos, politely complained "this goes beyond any limit"--a docile Greek public seems to have embraced the premise that youthful rebellion is justified and even admirable.

As a result, the country's middle and higher education system has been seriously disrupted, with classes suspended and over 600 schools and 150 university departments and buildings remaining under student occupation. In Athens and elsewhere, new recruits in protests and occupations include schoolchildren.

The spectacle of young people (and assorted criminals, leftwing extremists, and self-proclaimed anarchists) on a smash-and-burn spree wrapping themselves in the mantle of justice, martyrdom, and victimhood is only rivaled by that of a government incapable of making a clear and effective distinction between political grievance and thuggery, lawlessness and the rule of law.

Despite attempts in the national and international press (among them Le Monde and The Guardian) to give a deeper dimension to the Greek riots and to offer a mix of elaborate psychological and sociological explanations, the truth may actually be rather plain. The riots happened because the legal mechanisms designed to protect the public interest remained idle.

The reasons are not difficult to surmise. First, in Greece the public domain is the designated arena of political and personal advancement. Thus, except in rhetoric, there is effectively no concept of public interest to uphold and defend. There have been no counter-demonstrations demanding that the violence, looting, and destruction stop because they are against the public good.

Second, many in the public apparently sympathize with the rioters' stance that state corruption justifies state disruption. Third, an increasing number of Greeks across the political spectrum believe that the riots are the result of sinister foreign designs too powerful for any Greek government to deter.

The death of Gregoropoulos was neither sinister nor symptomatic of systemic police brutality, but what preceded it was clearly against the public interest. The police claim that the boy was part of a group of about 30 youths that attacked them with rocks and petrol bombs and that he was killed when a bullet fired in the air was deflected and hit him in the chest--a version that according to the accused officers' attorney is supported by yet-to-be released forensic tests.

The son of an affluent family and a former student at an exclusive Athens high school, Gregoropoulos was allegedly loitering with friends at Exarcheia, a neighborhood notorious for its disaffected youth, rogue anarchists, and drug addicts, where taunting the police is a popular sport and where only last month angered residents came out to protest the lack of police action. Whether he was actively involved in the events that led to the shooting, or was merely an unlucky bystander remains to be determined. This in the end may matter little.

In Greece, facts are not favored in political rhetoric and reportage. Ideology and political fiction offer a more certain and rewarding picture, and the demand for both is high. The state of mind that leads one to believe that the 9/11 attacks were the sinister work of the American government--as many Greeks adamantly believe--will easily conclude that Gregoropoulos' death was a cold-blooded murder with an elaborate cover-up already in the works.

As with the 2006 forest fires (reputed to be the work of arsonists from neighboring countries), conspiracy theories are fueling speculation about the riots' being part of wider plots to destabilize Greece--something that the country's governing parties have been doing quite admirably on their own for decades. True to the spirit of conspiracy, no clear picture has emerged about who the rioters are, based on arrest records and other information. The designation "the familiar strangers," or "the hooded ones," accords them the operative status that justifies what many in the public want to hear.

But statements like "we have decided to storm only big businesses, chain stores and banks and not small businesses, because they are everyday workers" (James Hider, The Times, December 13, 2008) and a teenager's resolution that "Athens must burn, especially the banks" (Matthew Campbell, The Sunday Times, December 14, 2008) suggest an increasingly emboldened attitude. Athens Institute for Training and Vocational Guidance (IEKEP) institute director Penelope Stathakopoulos told The Guardian's Ian Traynor that "a lot of these kids believe in zero." Myths become especially powerful when the social order breaks down and the instruments of law are demonized.

In scenes reminiscent of the Intifada, rock-throwing youths in masks and headscarves proclaimed Gregoropoulos a martyr who would live forever in his people's memory. A black-clad crowd of 6,000 attended his funeral, including hundreds of high school students accompanied by teachers. TV cameras and reporters stood by to register the unfolding national drama and attribute it in somber tones to the profound anxiety suffered by youth uncertain about their future and traumatized by Greece's failing government and its corruption.

Resorting to Delphic platitudes historically favored by Greece's ever-vigilant left and aimed especially at gullible young ears, protesters' signs declared the need for "schools not bombs," and charged the Greek state with killing its young--"bullets for your youth, money for your banks."

On the sixth day of the riots, this cheap rhetoric once again proved successful: emboldened high school students attacked newspapers and police buildings in and around Athens and in major cities. A day later, young men armed with crowbars attacked the office of the accused officers' attorney and, after smashing everything on site, walked out of the building undisturbed.

Faced from the start with widespread media condemnation and calls by socialist (PASOK) and radical left (SYRIZA) opposition parties for Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' resignation and early elections, the conservative (New Democracy) government rushed to issue apologies, effectively putting its political survival above the accused officers' right to a fair trial and the rule of law. Police were subsequently ordered to use minimum force, and the embattled Interior Minister declared the primacy of human life over property, a statement that certainly resonated with looters and vandals all over the country.

The rioters, who are so far winning the game, are taking advantage of a powerful tool that the Greek state has put at their disposal. They may rest, go online, and replenish their arsenal at public expense by taking shelter in university buildings protected by an asylum law that bans
police from entering unless authorized by university officials. Student sit-ins and patrols that control entrance into facilities are a common sight during occupations, while the absence of a quorum in student meetings virtually ensures that extremists will monopolize action in the name of the majority.

Two years ago, in the summer of 2006, Karamanlis tried to end the constitutional protection of university grounds as part of reform legislation intended to salvage the country's deteriorating high education institutions. The response was predictable. Ten thousand mostly leftwing students clashed with police, some breaking into the Athens Law School. Across the country, university buildings and department were occupied and police were attacked with gasoline bombs and furniture. The government lost; the extremists won.

The federation of university professors (POSDEP) argued at the time that the proposed reforms, among them provisions to establish private universities and restrict matriculation and examination times (currently students may take a decade to finish their degree), would devalue and commercialize state degrees. It was a bizarre warning given the poor showing of Greek universities in international rankings (only two universities make the lower end in the Shanghai listing of the world's best 500 universities), an accomplishment for which the professors should collectively take credit.

Karamanlis and his then Education Minister Marietta Yiannakou underestimated entrenched political and economic interests in the academy and public education sector and the influence of Greece's radical left on student organizations. Had the legislation become law in 2006, the events of this December might never have taken place, at least on this scale.

Since the riots began, discussion of endemic corruption and related social ills has dominated editorials in the Greek press as many experts and political personalities have rushed to interpret the behavior of the rioters, who are purportedly rebelling to correct the failures of adults. But punditry of this kind rarely raises real issues like making parents (if they can be identified) accountable to the full extent of the law for damages incurred by their children or sending the bill to radical left parties whose members unabashedly proclaim the need for perpetual revolution and destruction of the establishment, even though their leadership is among the country's wealthiest citizens.

The total cost of the riots to the Greek state is still hard to determine, since they are far from over. Currently (Dec. 18), damages to businesses are estimated to have reached over 200 million euros, while the disruption of the country's lucrative tourist industry is likely to last beyond this coming summer. With the largest account deficit in the Eurozone, one fifth of its population under the poverty line, rising unemployment particularly among youth, and a global crisis soon to hit hard on all sectors of the economy, this is the last thing that Greece--or any country--would wish upon itself.

As the majority of New Democracy supporters have conceded in recent polls, blame falls squarely on the Karamanlis government for failure to restore law and order and maneuver
conniving opposition parties, PASOK and especially the radical left SYRIZA (whose hand in the riots is all but certain) into a show of unity. But even if against all odds Karamanlis proves resilient and survives this crisis, the mindset that made it possible and the dangers it poses for
the country's internal security and stability will persist.

Javno: "Far-left group claims Greek bomb attack"

A Greek far-left group claimed responsibility on Monday for a bomb attack at a politician's home in Athens. In a statement posted on the Internet, the Conspiracy of Fire Cells said Dimitris Androulakis, a member of the socialist government, was a "lackey of the authorities" who was targeted for betraying the left.

The attack Friday caused minor damage to Androulakis' property and followed the pattern of earlier incidents, with the device hidden inside a pressure cooker and a warning telephoned to the authorities before the explosion. The group also said it wanted to give the authorities a show of its fighting power.

Five suspected members of the group have been arrested since September, most recently on Saturday, though the Conspiracy's Internet statement denied all links with the five. Last month the Conspiracy said it was behind a similar attack on the home of a conservative Euro MP, Marietta Giannakou. (...) >>>

Deutsche Welle: "Greek politician targeted in bombing"

A bomb exploded early Friday in the center of Athens, outside the private residence of a Greek member of European Parliament (MEP). The blast caused damage but no injuries, according to reports.

The bomb was left in front of the entrance to the building where Marietta Giannakou, one of 22 Greek MEPs, lives. The bomb, which was inside a bag, damaged vehicles and the entrance of the building.

Giannakou, who was formerly the Greek minister of education and religious affairs, is a member of the center-right New Democracy Party, one of the two main political parties in Greece. (...) >>>

A forceful blast ripped through a Eurobank branch office in an Athens suburb in Tuesday, causing widespread damage. No one was hurt in the attack. The police was tipped off 10 minutes before the blast. A police unit on surveillance happened upon the attackers shortly after. They stopped four men on motor cycles carrying machine guns, who yelled: "Move out of the way otherwise a bloodbath will take place here. The four attackers got away. Our correspondent, Ioannis Michaletos is commenting as follows: This IED is a rather complicated device and highly lethal if exploded. It resembles the same method of the IRA, ETA but also Islamic organizations. All experts in Greece agree about a definite connection with the Middle East with possible "executive organs" for the Balkan mercenary market.

I stand with the same conclusions I have made since early December. Moreover the bomb was about to explode the same day the Greek PM was about to meet with Obama's representatives. Therefore the ones planting the bombs were aiming at damaging Greek-American relations.
Lastly, according to a Greek daily, just a few days before the incident "an ex American diplomat was at the center of an illegal exchange with a Hezbollah agent in Athens, specifically in the house of the former in Plaka. A group of Greek and American agents stopped at the last moment a transaction between the two that most probably involved money and documents. No further data were released or an official report by the authorities".

In the Serbianna blog on the 9th of December I mentioned around "Renegade Western intelligence agents working with Islamic figures for financial gains. The situation is still in flux, but it is more than certain that it is related with developments in the Middle East ...

Stratfor Global Intelligence: "Greece: A Dud IED and Lessons Learned"

A nonfunctional improvised explosive device recovered outside a Citibank branch in Athens is likely a sign of an inexperienced bombmaker. Nevertheless, if this person is not identified and captured, future devices may prove to be more reliable.

In the early hours of Feb. 18, Greek police disabled an improvised explosive device (IED) left in a stolen vehicle parked outside a Citibank branch in a suburb of Athens. The device reportedly was constructed of five cooking-gas cylinders filled with an improvised explosive mixture and was designed to be activated by a mechanical clock.

According to police, a security guard noticed two men park the car in front of the bank at 4:30 a.m. and called police when the men did not return. The police responded, then called an explosive ordnance disposal unit, which rendered the device safe. Police said they received no warning call that the device had been planted (such calls are not uncommon in Europe, where some Marxist bombers try to limit civilian casualties), though the bombers’ planting of the device at 4:30 a.m. suggests that the strike was meant to be symbolic and not to cause mass casualties. Banks are among the foreign and commercial targets frequently selected for attacks by militant leftists.

CNN: "Greek PM condemns attack on TV station"

(...) Masked gunmen opened fire on the offices of Alter TV and tossed a makeshift explosive, but caused no injuries, national police said. The incident follows a spree of extremist attacks which have been rocking the Greek capital for weeks. Gunmen, mounted on two high-powered motorcycles, sped by the side entrance of the network shortly before the Alter TV prime-time newscast, stopping briefly to shoot at a fleet of cars parked within the station's compound, according to witnesses at Alter TV.

"We counted at least 13 shots," said Alter TV journalist George Stergiopoulos. "When they stopped, I looked out and saw them zipping away." (...) There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. (...) Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos swiftly condemned the incident, saying an attack against the media was "an attack against the freedom of speech and democracy." (...) Fox News: "Renewed Riots Break Out in Greece as Protesters Clash With Police"
Masked youths clashed with police in central Athens Friday in the first major test of the Greek government's vow to crack down on violent protesters after nationwide riots last month. A group of demonstrators broke away from a rally by thousands of students protesting government education reforms and hurled rocks and flares at riot police who responded with tear gas and flash grenades. At least six protesters were detained, an Associated Press reporter witnessed. The rally was the first demonstration since conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis vowed tougher policing to counter the "catastrophic violence" of nationwide riots last month sparked by the police's fatal shooting of a teenager on Dec. 6. Greek police say a weapon gunmen have fired at police in Athens was used last year in an attack claimed by a domestic extremist group that has previously targeted the U.S. Embassy. A policeman was critically wounded in Monday's pre-dawn attack. An automatic rifle and a 9mm caliber weapon were used.

Police said ballistics tests showed the 9mm caliber weapon matched one used in an April 30, 2007, attack on a police station in an Athens suburb. That attack caused no injuries but was claimed by the far-left Revolutionary Struggle group. The group had also claimed an attack in which a rocket-propelled grenade was fired into the front of the U.S. Embassy in Jan. 2007, causing damage but no injuries.

The Raw Story: "Shots fired, police car toppled as 2,000 protest in Athens"

Shots were fired at an anti-riot van in Athens on Tuesday and youths damaged a police car as some 2,000 students marched in new protests that have rocked the capital since police killed a teenager. At the start of the march, roughly a dozen youths toppled a police vehicle, with the officers inside escaping unscathed. Earlier in the day, shots were fired at a riot police van in the Goudi district of Athens, missing the 23 officers on board but hitting the engine. One of the van's tyres also burst. A group calling itself "Popular Action" claimed responsibility for the strike on Tuesday evening in an anonymous phone call to, the news website said. Police said they found seven shells and two bullet remains from a 7.62 calibre rifle apparently fired from inside a park that forms part of the Athens university campus. (...) >>>

Modern Conservative: "Progress Report and Analysis of the Greek Intifada"

While the Indymedia mediated Intifada continues unabated, there are sections of Greek society who are on to the transnational efforts to cause chaos and mayhem in their country.

Anarchism as a political or cultural phenomenon is nothing new in Greece. The Marxist Communist Party - standing out as just one among a number of Leftist dinosaurs - is still good for some 8% of the vote.

In Greece anarchists also go under the name of hoodbearers; elsewhere they may be known as squatters, anti-globalists, one-worlders, students, disenfranchised youths - whatever. The present revolt is a close copy of France's burning barricades, as is the narrative in the press.

The mainstream media as usual seem to be in on the conspiracy, pointing ludicrously at unemployment rates, neglect by the state, and now poor education. If some are to be believed Greece is either bordering a police state, or alternatively, is an almost failed state.

Here's the news on the latest activities towards toppling the democratically elected government of Center-Right PM Kostas Karamanlis (all from Yahoo!News):

- "Firebombs thrown at Greek police" (not a weekend passes by without at least one such assault)
- "Greek youths hang protest banners from Acropolis"
- "Greek youths take over TV, radio stations"

What no one mentions is that the Karamanlis Government in a drive for educational reform wants to put an end to the so-called “academic asylum,” which prohibits security forces from entering university campuses. It is a by-product of a spade of the hyper corrections that took place under previous Socialist Governments, symbolically outlawing the military junta's political persecution of Leftist students. JM: "What Ever Happened to ‘Sticks and Stones?’" by Frank Furedi

The other day I received a helpful guide to the words that I should not use by a publisher who was interested in my work. As expected, the guide warned me about using the word “retard” to refer to retarded people. But I was surprised to discover that the term “mentally ill” was now deemed so offensive that I was instructed to use the term “mental health service user.” (...) But what struck me was how out of touch I had become with the sensibility of contemporary censorship. I was genuinely taken aback when I discovered that the term (...) “civilized,” ought not be used by a culturally sensitive author because of its alleged racist implications. (...) Words are frequently depicted as weapons that can traumatize and psychologically damage its targets. Consequently, the right to free speech often competes with the right not to be offended. From this perspective, censorship is not perceived as a form of authoritarian intrusion but as an enlightened measure designed to protect the vulnerable from pain. (...) underwritten by powerful cultural forces. (...) there is only a feeble cultural affirmation for free speech. Indeed, (...) academics and public figures are more interested in criticizing the ideal of free speech than in upholding this right. (...) Perversely, the exercise of free speech is associated with elite privilege. It is represented as affirming the status of the powerful and the negation of the oppressed and the vulnerable. (...) >>>
