Greenism: archive November 1, 2007 - December 31, 2009

I sometimes wish that we could have, over the next five or ten years, a lot of horrid things happening — you know, like tornadoes in the Midwest and so forth — that would get people very concerned about climate change.

Watts Up With That: "French Revolution! Carbon tax ruled unconstitutional just two days before taking effect"

This new French carbon tax was scheduled to go into law on Jan1, 2010. The tax was steep: 17 euros per ton of carbon dioxide (USD $24.40). In a stunning move, and surely a blow to warmists everywhere, the tax has been found unconstitutional and thrown out. Originally found here (Google Translation). Lord Monckton was kind enough to assist me in deciphering the meaning of the ruling and writes: (...) >>>

Watts Up With That: "Climategate on Finnish TV – with English subtitles"

You may recall that Finnish TV interviewed Steve McIntyre last month. They did a superb job with that. Now they have a new 3 part YouTube series out on Climategate, with English subtitles. It is well worth the watching. A part that particularly struck me was: “They reveal an aggressive atmosphere, where the scientists consider dissenting colleagues as their enemies…“ Maybe just maybe, one of our other TV networks besides Fox will have the journalistic integrity to do a similar report. Big Government: "The Green Religion and ClimateGate: Interview With Steven Mosher", by Larry O'Connor (includes audio material)

This morning on The Dennis Miller Show, Guest host Andrew Breitbart interviewed Steven M. Mosher, a frequent contributor to the web site You probably haven’t heard of Mr. Mosher, but you should have. And that was the reason for our interview this morning. Andrew used his six hours of national radio time (yesterday and today) to highlight the top stories from the “Under Media”. ACORN, NEA, Van Jones, ClimateGate, stories that were virtually ignored by the major networks and pooh-poohed by the NY Times were, in fact, the stories that not only grabbed YOUR attention, but also drove legislation here at home as well as in Copenhagen. The American Spectator: "Wikipedia Meets Its Own Climategate", by Tom Bethell

(...) The scientific problem posed by measuring manmade global warming, if such warming really exists, is huge. There is no more complex field of science. (...) Faced with the complexity (...) the true scientist, at least initially, finds it difficult to be certain about the outcome. Politicians, or politicized scientists, then seized their opportunity. Ideologues like Connolley and politicians like Al Gore filled the vacuum. Armed with world-saving missionary zeal, they milked the prestige of science to suit their own political advantage. (...) But with the leaked emails known as Climategate more people are beginning to see that deception, not science, has been their principal weapon. And we see also that Wikipedia has lent itself to that deception. The political exploitation of science has gone on for some time -- discrediting nuclear power in addition to the use of oil and coal has been just one of its several goals. One unintended consequence, as Fred Singer said recently, is that the public may begin to disbelieve everything that begins "science says." In the present climate, that might be healthy, but in the long run it would not work to America's or the world's advantage. (...) >>>

Hot on the trail of the hoax hackers ...

Mail Online: "Chinese hackers linked to 'Warmergate' climate change leaked emails controversy", by Jason Lewis and Simon Parry

The investigation into the so-called Warmergate emails - the leaked data from the University of East Anglia’s climate change department - took a new twist last night when The Mail on Sunday tracked the stolen messages to a suspect computer which provides internet access to China. The address used to post the emails is also on an international ‘black list’ which highlights suspicious behaviour on the internet. The revelation comes after the Russian security service, the FSB – the former KGB – authorised the release of confidential information that allowed us to retrace the route taken by the email traffic. (...) >>>

On the lighter side of the Climate narrative, a crosspost from the DailyKos on Blue Commonwealth sees the political counter spin doctors working posthaste on the 'perception' side of the damage limitation operation. They've come up with ... "SwiftHack" (as in "swiftboating")! Great fantasy these guys have, don't you think. And there's plenty more where that came from.

The Blogmocracy in "Jim Hansen Self-Parody" follows the Climate Guru industry to its Ground Zero, quoting Robert Kennedy, Jr.:

Dr. James Hansen is Paul Revere to the foreboding tyranny of climate chaos—a modern-day hero who has braved criticism and censure and put his career and fortune at stake to issue the call to arms against the apocalyptic forces of ignorance and greed.
(My emphasis.) It spells the dialectic to a t: capitalist pigs, unlightened flat earthers are exploiting mother earth and the historically oppressed for their own egoistic needs ... but here comes the enlightened knight in shining armor to save the day ... this truly is the fodder of morons.

Frank Hutchison on Renew America has written an excellent essay on postmodern science. Or science, not by objective truth (which they reject on principle), but by that arbiter of postmodern truth, consensus. He also touches on another area, subjected to the same treatment: the lamentable Emerging Church. And irony of ironies, they've done it again. Fighting absolutism, authority and dogma to the teeth, they've created the mother of all unshakable dogma; and dissenters are treated as true heretics. Postmodern history is full such ironies. Read it all!

Renew America: "Corruption of the science establishment: causes and cures"

By now, most of my readers have heard of the scandal nicknamed "Climategate," involving the suppression of information that contradicts a supposed consensus of the science establishment about global warming. For ten or fifteen years, we have been told that when scientists have reached a consensus, all further debate should stop. (...) >>>

Dec. 22 entry read: On Dec. 19 we relayed Lawrence Solomon's article on the National Post informing us that "Wikipedia's Climate Doctor" had personally rewritten 5,428 climate articles. Delingpole added his twopence worth, revealing the climate doctor is a gd hippy! Today Solomon has more on the subject: battling the Hockey Team on Wikipedia ...

National Post: "Climategate at Wikipedia"

Since my Saturday column described how Wikipedia editors have been feverishly rewriting climate history over much of the decade, fair-minded Wikipedians have been doing their best to correct the record. No sooner than they remove gross distortions, however, than the distortions are replaced. William Connolley, a Climategate member and Wikipedia’s chief climate change propagandist, remains as active as ever. (...) >>>

CNN: "Tracking down the 'Climategate' hackers"

Like its namesake Watergate, "Climategate" started with a break-in. But this one was a cyber theft. IT security experts say hackers for hire likely broke into the email of climate researchers in rural England; and they knew what they were looking for. Key words like "trick" were as valuable as jewels. (...) With the help of Scotland Yard, local police say they are investigating. (...) Environmental campaigner, Richard Littlemore acknowledges the emails have emboldened those who deny climate change. "They have been frighteningly and remarkably successful. (...) Most of this conversation is not about science, it's about public relations. They want to talk about the emails because they don't want to talk about the evidence." (...) The broad consensus among climate scientists is that the climate is warming and humans are playing a significant role. But given the amount of energy devoted to the emails. The episode has taught us this. Hacking is criminal but it can also be influential. >>>

Wikipedia climate doctor is a gd hippy!

On Dec. 19 we relayed Lawrence Solomon's article on the National Post informing us that "Wikipedia's Climate Doctor" had personally rewritten 5,428 climate articles. Delingpole today has more. He concludes: "Like so many hippyish notions, Jimmy Wales’s idea of a free encyclopedia for everyone was a noble intention which has been cruelly and horribly abused by some very ugly people. Do you want to know just how ugly? I’ve been saving the worst till last. Here it is: William Connelley’s Wikipedia photograph. >>>

The Daily Bell traces the narratives and draws some powerful conclusions what the progressive oligarchy is up to. Global control is powered by 3 narratives: scarcity of strategic minerals, oil, water, food; conflict and wars for their control; rationalize the Muslim ethos standing in the way of the world order. This is in effect what the Unholy Alliance bring up for their protests (Iraq was about oil, and Islam is under attack). The general aim of COP15 was reinforcing the story and in particular to extend Kyoto carbon offset trade. Mission accomplished.

Day 32 and it's time to say goodbye to COP15 for the time being. The dossier will again take its place in the natural order of Politeia Articles, as one among many. It will of course return to the top of the blog, whenever there are developments in the ongoing negotiations or when there's news on the Greenism issue or on Climategate. Roger L. Simon of PJs has been in Copenhagen and assures us ... "I have seen the future and it stinks".

UK's chief COP15 negotiator Ed Miliband admits it's a failure and guess what ... it's China's fault! Real life is stranger than fiction. Get this! "Its delegates even blocked attempts by advanced industrial countries to set a target of an 80 per cent reduction by 2050 for themselves, even though China is classified as a developing country."

On warmist hub, the German Der Spiegel, has a plethora of articles on COP15, all calling it an unmitigated disaster, mostly blaming ... well, everyone - Us, humanity, the West. In a interview Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor - like Ed Miliband - has no qualms blaming the Chinese. Germany is the organizer of the next installment of the climate circus, mid 2010.

Dec. 21, 2009

Day 31: This may come as a surprise to some true believers in the Western world, but the reason the world is sinking away in its own dirt is capitalism's fault. That's where your need for penance stems from. These half baked dictators assembled in Hopenhagen keep their peoples captive in poverty and squalor; now they're blaming the free world for technology and prosperity. Jonah Goldberg on NRO The Corner has the story (makes your blood fairly boil).

Dec. 20, 2009

Day 30 of Climategate and COP15 is blissfully over. The good news: NGOs, climate fanatics, the eurocrats, and the Chavez Group hate it. The ominous postmodern rhetoric of John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace UK is worthy of any pocket potentate:

"The city of Copenhagen is a crime scene tonight, with the guilty men and women fleeing to the airport. There are no targets for carbon cuts and no agreement on a legally binding treaty. It is now evident that beating global warming will require a radically different model of politics than the one on display here in Copenhagen".
Expect the last remnants of Leftist liberalism to die with their eco illusions. Aim justifying the means, don't be surprised if the fascistic tendencies from here onwards go full throttle. Lord Monckton was manhandled in Hopenhagen. Briefly earlier he'd asked Czech President Vaclav Klaus "whether the draft Copenhagen Treaty’s proposal for what amounted to a communistic world government reminded him of the Communism under which he and his country had suffered for so long." "He thought for a moment – as statesmen always do before answering an unusual question – and said, “Maybe it is not brutal. But in all other respects, what it proposes is far too close to Communism for comfort."

Today, as I lay in the snow with a cut knee, a bruised back, a banged head, a ruined suit, and a written-off coat, I wondered whether the brutality of the New World Order was moving closer than President Klaus – or any of us – had realized. >>>

On that note, the gist of the COP15 deal:

- The climate fund is to resort under the UN, like developing countries wanted; $30bn of aid over the next three years, and a goal of $100bn a year by 2020. Hold on to your wallet.

- There's no legally binding document, but it is suggested by insiders that the political agreement is in fact an extension of the Kyoto Protocol; that would make sense in view of the salvation of the carbon credits market, reported yesterday by Delingpole. That leaves the US out of the loop (thank George W. Bush for his prescience); a year of political massaging and bribing should deliver a legal document by December 2010.

- The deal needs to be endorsed by all 193 nations at the talks; Nicaragua, Sudan, Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia have already rejected it, but that's just a negotiation ploy: their acceptance will be bought.

- A mitigation target of 2C and a loose stipulation "to take action to meet this objective" (!); a method for verifying industrialised nations' reduction of emissions is also included (China rather clings to its sovereignty).

Velvet Hammer over on Ironic Surrealism V3.0 has a transcript of the Obama press conference in Copenhagen. The Speech.

Back to the normal roundup:

Charlie Martin on PJs has been summing up the Climategate controversies, some of which have been breaking while we were focussed on the Copenhagen circus. In "Climategate: Faster and Faster, the Dominos Fall" Martin concludes: "It ought to be said that these adjustments don’t necessarily prove the data has been purposefully fudged. (...) the problem is, without the raw data, and without a clear explanation of the process by which the data has been adjusted (...) there is no way to tell what the adjustments are based on. The CRU clique asks us to trust them, when the history in the Climategate emails doesn’t say much to encourage trust."

- Caption: 4-Block World

1. The Climategate emails (...) make up only five percent of the Climategate files. The other 95 percent, the programs and data and documents, are where the real story is hiding.

2. This story broke into the world media Wednesday. Novosti reported that the data used for temperature measurements in Russia appeared to have been carefully chosen from the warmest reporting sites.

3. The Climategate files forced the UK Meteorological Office to make at least part of their raw data available. One of the first was Willis Eschenbach, at Watts Up With That. Read the whole discussion and also Eschenbach’s answer (...)

4. The next domino was a study by Dr. Richard Keen of the University of Colorado that was reported at the Air Vent blog. In it, Dr. Keen compares the raw data from the National Climate Data Center (NCDC) with data from the Global Climate historical network, the adjusted data as published in the IPCC report. Dr. Keen finds that the raw data does indeed show an upward trend of 0.69°C per century (...) The data used by the IPCC instead shows warming four times greater, 2.8°C per century, an adjustment of about 2°C.

5. Other such comparisons followed: Data from around Nashville; data collected in Antarctica, which, after adjustment, comes out to be from a single site near the ocean; data from the Baltic and Scandinavian countries; even in Central Park. In all of these cases, there are mysterious, unexplained warming adjustments for the last part of the century. (...) Read it all ... >>>

6. But that's not all. In a PJs Must Read exclusive Joseph D'Aleo - no non-entiry (Executive Director of, a former professor of meteorology and climatology, the First Director of Meteorology at the Weather Channel, and a fellow of the American Meteorology Society) - has more on the Russian style cherry picking in "Climategate: … And Just Like That, the Warming’s Gone". HadCRU was not alone:

Perhaps one of the biggest issues with the global data is station dropout after 1990. Over 6000 stations were active in the mid-1990s. Just over 1000 are in use today. The stations that dropped out were mainly rural and at higher latitudes and altitudes — all cooler stations. This alone should account for part of the assessed warming. China had 100 stations in 1950, over 400 in 1960, then only 25 by 1990. This changing distribution makes any assessment of accurate change impossible.
We now know that the Russian station count dropped from 476 to 121, meaning “over 40% of Russian territory was not properly included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.” (...) Canada is largely missing. As is Greenland. The Arctic. Much of Africa. Brazil. And parts of Australia. (See this post.)

To fill in these large holes, data was extrapolated from great distances away. (...) They applied no correction for urban growth or spread, which can produce an artificial but very localized warming (see recent Georgia Tech release here). And in the United States, Anthony Watts (...) had found 89% were poorly or very poorly sited (...) A few preliminary surveys in other parts of the world indicate the U.S. is not alone.

Satellites have measured global temperatures since 1979, and have shown warming. Originally the satellites were in close agreement with the data centers’ global numbers, but gradually the data centers have diverged and are now approaching 0.5 degrees Celsius (...) There indeed has been man-made global warming — but it’s from the paint-by-numbers men and women at NOAA, NASA, and Hadley … and now, just like that, it’s gone. >>>

7. The Washington Times has another to add: "The latest hit to climate-change credibility comes via an embarrassing revelation from Ben Santer, one of the lead authors of the 1995 U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group I report, which is one of the holy documents of global-warming theology. Mr. Santer admitted that he deleted sections of the document that stated that humans were not responsible for climate change. (...) >>>

8. There's more. Lawrence Solomon on the National Post: "Wikipedia's Climate Doctor - How Wikipedia's green doctor rewrote 5,428 climate articles":

(...) Connolley took control of all things climate in the most used information source the world has ever known – Wikipedia. Starting in February 2003 (...) Connolley set to work on the Wikipedia site. He rewrote Wikipedia’s articles on global warming, on the greenhouse effect, on the instrumental temperature record, on the urban heat island, on climate models, on global cooling. On Feb. 14, he began to erase the Little Ice Age; on Aug.11, the Medieval Warm Period. In October, he turned his attention to the hockey stick graph. He rewrote articles on the politics of global warming and on the scientists who were skeptical of the band. Richard Lindzen and Fred Singer, two of the world’s most distinguished climate scientists, were among his early targets, followed by others that the band especially hated, such as Willie Soon and Sallie Baliunas of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, authorities on the Medieval Warm Period.
All told, Connolley created or rewrote 5,428 unique Wikipedia articles. His control over Wikipedia was greater still, however, through the role he obtained at Wikipedia as a website administrator, which allowed him to act with virtual impunity. When Connolley didn’t like the subject of a certain article, he removed it — more than 500 articles of various descriptions disappeared at his hand. When he disapproved of the arguments that others were making, he often had them barred — over 2,000 Wikipedia contributors who ran afoul of him found themselves blocked from making further contributions. Acolytes whose writing conformed to Connolley’s global warming views, in contrast, were rewarded with Wikipedia’s blessings. In these ways, Connolley turned Wikipedia into the missionary wing of the global warming movement. (...) >>>

Dec. 19, 2009

Update: Just pulled an advance copy of the GGND off Twitter ... the what? The GGND, Global Green New Deal draft paper on "a big push strategy to drive down the cost of renewable energy, ramp up deployment in developing countries; end energy poverty; contribute to economic recovery and growth; generate employment in all countries; and help avoid dangerous climate change."

From an organization like the UN one would expect a text that kept some objective distance, leaning perhaps towards cool, technical detachment, but true to the postmodern reality we get this completely involved, emotive yada yada, full of empathy and subjectivism. It's practically a tear jerker! A sample:

(...) we must remember that emissions reduction is a goal; it is not a strategy. In fact, the almost exclusive focus on emissions targets offers few attractive choices to negotiators (Birdsall and Subramanian, 2009). It locks the world into a perceived "win‐lose" or even "no‐win" scenario, as an ever‐shrinking emissions pie must be divided up among (1) those who have already eaten more than a lion's share, and (2) those whose growing and justifiable hunger exceeds the size of the remaining pieces on offer. As a goal, the need for emissions reduction is unimpeachable. As a strategic focus, however, it is leading us down a dead‐end path. The only viable strategy is to create a bigger pie – and this requires us to shift our focus from the rapid reduction of greenhouse emissions to the rapid expansion of renewable energy (...) >>>
Let me translate that: everything is a zero sum game (the pie) with these collectivists, but true to type they're never consistent. So "creating a bigger pie" is code for pulling the wool over people's eyes, creating the perception that you've gained something you haven't. "Those who have already eaten more than a lion's share" that's you and the climate debt you accrued over the last two centuries. The document bears close scrutiny over the coming days.

The new buzz word to watch out for: from global warming to climate change to "dangerous climate change" (note that it can never be allowed to become beneficial; this was also the problem with global warming: more people die of cold than they do from heat).

And so we have arrived on the 29th day of Climategate and the 10th and final day of the COP15 circus. What will it be? A grand finale or an anticlimax? A legal deal, an official treaty, was never in sight but that won't mean negotiations will come to a halt. This assault by the neo commies to establish world Socialism will continue for as long as they can get away with it. Vast amounts of tax payers' money is involved (scroll to yesterday's entry). Voters will have to make their voices heard at the ballot box, going en bloc for climate skeptic parties. Overheard last night on Dutch radio: a major warmist member of  the Labor Party: "this is not about the climate, but about spreading the wealth". Case closed, I'd say.

  • In the margins of COP15, Hugo Chavez held an enthusiastically applauded rant in which he ripped the Netherlands for putting three small Caribbean islands (Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba) just north of Venezuela at the disposal of the US as a launching pad for "aggression" against him (auto translation of De Telegraaf newspaper article). Evidently he needs an external enemy quite badly  for his Red Bolivarian Revolution to take hold. More on dossier: "Socialist Utopia Redux" dtd Dec. 18, 2009.
In the US meanwhile the Republicans are taking action to counter the Obamist coup committed by the Environmental Protection Agency in which they declared the air we exhale (CO2) and a important component for life on earth, a hazardous pollutant. BREAKING NEWS - FOX NEWS: "India, China Walk Out of Climate Summit as Talks Fail" ... and return
  • DEVELOPING STORY: India, China and Brazil walked out of the climate summit in Copenhagen on Friday, the Press Trust of India reported. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Brazilian President President Lula da Silva left the session to hold a parallel meeting, reportedly to confer about concerns over the "umbrella paragraph" in the draft of an agreement being worked on for signing later today. The three reportedly later rejoined the conference.(...) >>>
! Delingpole on the Telegraph has the goods: "we won the battle, but at Copenhagen we just lost the war". He has two pieces of news: a leaked confirmation that this cynical circus is indeed a ploy, and a perhaps not so surprising conclusion. Delingpole is quoting "Obergruppenfuhrer among eco-freaks Bill McKibben at Mother Jones" (apparently a true believer, now completely desillusioned):

(...) This afternoon at Copenhagen a document mysteriously leaked from the UN Secretariat. It was first reported from the Guardian, and by the time it was posted online it oddly had my name scrawled all across the top—I don’t know why, because I didn’t leak it. (...) this entire conference is an elaborate sham, where the organizers have known all along that they’re heading for a very different world than the one they’re supposedly creating. (...) >>>
concluding that ...

Never mind all the talk of President Obama’s trifling $100 billion pledge. This is very small beer compared with the truly eye-watering sums that will be ransacked from our economies and our wallets over the next decades in the name of “carbon emissions reduction.” Richard North has spotted this, even if virtually nobody else has. The key point, he notes, is the Copenhagen negotiators’ little-publicised decision to save the Kyoto Protocol. This matters because it was at Kyoto that the mechanisms for establishing a global carbon market were established. Carbon trading could not possibly exist without some form of agreement between all the world’s governments on emissions: the market would simply collapse. By keeping Kyoto alive, the sinister troughers of global corporatism have also kept their cash cow alive. (...) >>>
In short, it is one huge conspiracy of transnational progressivism and transnational corporatism: in fact, a postmodern form of Fascism. What else is new?

Fox News: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters in Copenhagen Thursday the United States is willing to commit up to $10 billion a year by 2012, and would support a global fund of $100 billion a year to help developing nations deal with climate change, provided the nations here are willing live up to the 'transparency' demanded by the U.S. (...) >>>

In the meanwhile the Russians with their 'dirty' gas interests have thrown another spanner in the works. Delingpole has the story - Climategate Goes Serial. Apparently the boys in Hadley (or in the World Meteorological Organization according to Hadley) had been selective in chosing their data from Russia, picking figures from urban areas rather than Siberia, where temperatures tend to drop a bit.

But polemics are on with some clever dickey pointing out that "those Russian 'experts' might not have our best interests at heart". Quite, but that doesn't render their findings false per se. But one moment later Will Heaven's colors are showing:  the source is suspect because it's a libertarian think tank! Yes, that's indeed quite different from a science department infested with postmodern neo commies. But as someone's pointing out, it's part of a pattern.

Politico: "Two top House Republicans are urging President Barack Obama to use federal dollars allocated for climate change science to investigate the “climategate” controversy." Now there's a novel idea, but isn't that a bit like asking the Pope to launch an independent inquiry into the veracity of the Gospels?

26/7 and as northern hemisphere descends into ice, COP15 "Beat the Heat" ...
  • BREAKING NEWS - James Delingpole has the goods! "Climategate: the lawyers move in – those scientists are toast!" - God bless America and – can I really be saying this? – God bless the legal profession! (...) The US Department of Energy (DOE) – under pressure, most likely, from Senator Inhofe – has issued a “Litigation Hold Notice” to its various sub-departments asking them to retain any documents pertaining to the Climatic Research Unit at University of East Anglia. (...) What does it mean? Big, BIG trouble for the Climategate scientists is what it means. You don’t mess with US lawyers (...) Read the entire story >>>
Dutch magazine Elsevier sums the Copenhagen circus up thus: "Hordes of honchos, prostitutes, a giant carbon footprint (46,200 tons), and wholesale rioting by climate activists (1,200 arrests)". What! exclaims another. You just don't understand! Scientists are in a real panic! Yeah ... (yawn - whatever).
  • I don't know what the temperatures are in your part of the world, but last night temperatures here dropped to -6C. The Dutch Minister for the Environment met Arnie Schwarzenegger last night at "Beat the Heat", one of the many climate events in the margins of the circus. He told her "not to worry" about the way things are developing. Not so fast Arnie!
Late last night we broke the news that Al Gore warned that "the Arctic polar ice cap could disappear entirely in the summer months in as little as five years". Times Online caught it on video. Well, today the same Times Online reports this turned into an major gaffe when the scientist on whose data this dramatic claim was based exposed Alarming Al for the snake oil salesman he is: “I would never try to estimate likelihood at anything as exact as this,” retorted Dr Maslowski.

And far from being "fresh" as Gore claimed, the figures were actually quite stale. Professor Jim Overland, a leading oceanographer at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration added: “This is an exaggeration that opens the science up to criticism from sceptics”. Quite. Read it all >>>
  • The Heritage Foundation have feet on the ground in Copenhagen and conclude that "They Can’t Even Run A Conference, Let Alone the Global Economy". The post is also going over the carbon offset trade, made possible under the Kyoto Treaty. Surprise! It's now descending into fraud. (Someone remarked that these schemes are also under pressure as Kyoto expires.) Many good posts by Heritage eye witnesses on The Foundry. Get it all >>>
Dec. 15, 2009

25/6 in the climate era, 2nd week in COP15 and China abandons its demands for' climate debt reparations' from the developed world (presumably because its development depends largely on the ongoing copying of its knock-offs, rather than freedom to create).
  • BREAKING NEWS! Al Gore, star draw at COP15, over the weekend pulled another computer model from a drawer, one predicting that "the Arctic polar ice cap could disappear entirely in the summer months in as little as five years". Times Online have the story and the video.
! The next target of environmentalist busy-bodies: the free sees - 400-year law of Mare Liberum (The Free Sea), the book first propagating the principle that the seas are international territory, under attack by ecofascism (NRC, by Folkert Jensma).
  • In the meanwhile a bloc of developing countries known in tranzie terms as the G77 are playing tough ball, going in the opposite direction demanding emission cut backs and more 'pledges'. They're refusing to attend working groups to the chagrin of British Climate Czar Ed Miliband, who'd like to make progress before the big cheeses will arrive on Wednesday. But everyone's looking at Obama for salvation of the climate circus.

Update around dinner time: they're back, after assurances that "rich nations are not conspiring to soften their commitments" ...
Newsbusters have this: "The Climatic Research Unit at the heart of the ClimateGate scandal has taken down most of the information previously available at its website." What tf does that mean?
  • The last remaining investigative journalist, James Delingpole has the goods on Big Industry and the IPCC - this is truly outrageous! These people dare lecture others on ethics!!! Delingpole is just great to have uncovered this.
Prison Planet has the story that "Not Evil Just Wrong" journalist, Phelim McAleer who suffered at the hands of Al Gore's gorillas, has been in trouble again over the weekend - now assaulted for his inquisitiveness by thugs in the pay of the UN.
  • Jay Richard says the Religious Left are playing deaf and dumb to Climategate, "not really up on the issue". Well, it's a minor matter compared to saving the climate, so who blames them?
Perhaps a trifle off topic here, but a parallel heist to the tune of potentially $700 bn is already in the works - the global Financial Transactions Tax (FTT) or the "Robin Hood Bill" also referred to as "Wall Street helping Main Street" Bill. The upshot: "The global anger against the bankers; the huge pressure on rich country budgets; the need for money in 2010 to rescue the MDGs [Millennium Development Goals] and from failure; to protect poor countries from the economic crisis; and the need to come up with money for climate change to unlock a global deal. All combine to make a very strong political backdrop" for this heist. Kudos for Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media for piecing together "The Secret Plan to Pass a Global Tax".
Tony Blair confirms: global warming may not be happening and science may be fuzzy, but we have to to this on the off chance that it's actually true. So we cook the books, vent gross hyperbole and spread lies because everyone has got to be on board with this.

Dec. 14, 2009

Day 24/5 and Fausta is showing why these tranzie gatherings are so disgusting to those still laying claim to some moral absolutism: "Iranian Prime Minister Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe plan to address negotiators at international climate talks in Copenhagen next week. The three leaders are listed in a line-up of more than 180 government officials published in a United Nations schedule of speakers. " All claiming "eco justice", no doubt. Wholeheartedly agree: nyuk, nyuk, nyuk ...
  • In the meanwhile, whereas until very recently they were putting on a brave face, today even the warmist lobby is admitting Climategate has a negative impact on the negotiations: Red Orbit: "'Climategate' Furor Continues" - "(...) Author James Hoggan told AFP that the controversy "gives voice to dissenters at the table in Copenhagen, like Saudi Arabia and Russia." Hoggan is the author of "Climate Cover-up" about big-business funding of opponents of environmental causes. (...) will depend on the United States, where political opposition to climate change is driven by an extremist view" (here we are again with EXtreeeme positioning caper!)
J.R. Dunn on American Thinker goes as far as to suggest Climategate is the worst blow the left has received in quite some time. The only comparable episode in recent years is Rathergate (...) Climategate is all the worse because (...) warmists really did think they (...) needed only to formalize it at the international level to guarantee themselves a free ride. It's a great synopsis of the entire fallout in scientific, transnational and political terms! Do read it all, but let me give you this gem:
"Climategate's progress has left plenty of wreckage in its path, including ruined careers, damaged institutions, and a deeply chastened scientific establishment. (...) Reports from Copenhagen since then have been muddled, confused, and deeply uninteresting. Copenhagen was supposed to be high real-world drama, with the world's leaders frantically working to stave off the Big Heat in much the same fashion as they might a menacing comet or asteroid, while the world looked on in frightened awe. The CRU e-mails, though unmentioned by anyone apart from the Saudis, have transformed it all into a cartoon, with our noble, tireless statesmen become so many Wile E. Coyotes heading off the cliff with rockets strapped to their skates."
On Examiner Thomas Fuller has an earful about EPA declaring CO2 a danger to the public health, which he assumes will "be shortly followed by water--after all, if global warming continues, we all will drown, right?" EPA seems to be another one of Obama's insidious institutions for the Orwellianization of free society. But get this:
"(...) the EPA, which is supposed to conduct independent scientific inquiry into the substances it chooses to regulate, did not do so for CO2. They chose instead to rely on IPCC reports on global warming. Those IPCC reports were in large part prepared by the scientists under investigation now, and rely heavily on the data that up and disappeared. Expect a decade of lawsuits."
There's a prospect!

Dec. 13, 2009

Day 23 of Climategate/4 in the COP15 era, and The Associated Press (AP) is BREAKING NEWS! They've examined all 1,073 emails and conclude: "SCIENCE NOT FAKED, BUT NOT PRETTY". Since it's from AP we cannot quote any of this, but read it for yourself, keeping in mind that AP is to journalism, what Climategate is to science.

The AP article is explicitly mainstreaming warming extremists in science - they admit skeptics deaths were cheered - they smothered dissent - trashed skeptics because funded by Big 'dirty' Oil with whom they have strategic partnerships themselves - and scientsts at Hadley were entirely objective and don't dance to the tune of their pay masters!

Hiding the decline is still fraud, adjusting data to fit the outcome (here called "manipulated deductions"). On PJM David Bellamy weighs in about the Medieval Warm Period and how that was made to vanish. He calls it "scandalous examples of cherry picking on record, a blatant attempt to keep the world scared of carbon dioxide, and to keep reputations and research budgets safe".

Downright scandalous is the AP ignoring the destruction of raw date. Bellamy: "This August (...) the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit disclosed that it had destroyed the raw data for its global surface temperature records. Despite the fact that they own some of the most powerful computers in the world, the reason they advanced was “an alleged lack of storage space.” The very foundation of the global warming argument was gone forever. Draw your own conclusions — sabotage or desperation?"

AP's exculpation parades Dan Sarewitz, a science policy professor at Arizona State University, quoted saying: "This is normal science politics, but on the extreme end, though still within bounds". Go figure what's going on in the field. AP conclude that the data was presented as convincingly as possible. Oh really?

But Andrew Bolt on "An Honest Climate Debate" is picked up the following from the Herald Sun in "Those defending it are damned themselves": "Princeton’s Robert Socolow (is) a prominent supporter of the link between CO2 and global warming who has warned of possible “catastrophic consequences” of climate change. (...) Socolow’s research institute at Princeton has received well over $20 million in grants dealing with climate change and carbon reduction…
”It is Socolow whose entire research funding stream, well over a million dollars a year, depends on continued alarm over global warming,” says William Happer, a fellow Princeton University professor and head of the Happer physics lab who has raised the question of a conflict of interest…
! Wretchard has another great post up on Pajamas from which we'll quote at length. "Rocket man" describes the mechanism of "confirmation bias", known in the field as "consensus", which also wrecked NASA's space shuttle program:

(...) Universities and departments have set policies to attract climate science funding. Climate science centers don’t spontaneously spring into existence – they were created, in increasingly rapid numbers, to partake in the funding bonanza that is AGW. This by itself is not political – currently, universities are scrambling to set up “clean energy” and “sustainable technology” centers. Before it was bio-tech and nanotechnology. But because AGW-funding is politically motivated, departments have adroitly set their research goals to match the political goals of their funding sources. Just look at the mission statements of these climate research institutes – they don’t seek to investigate the scientific validity or soundness of AGW-theory, they assume that it is true, and seek to research the implications or consequences of it.

This filters through every level. Having created such a department, they must fill it with faculty that will carry out their mission statement. The department will hire professors who already believe in AGW and conduct research based on that premise. Those professors will hire students that will conduct their research without much fuss about AGW. And honestly, if you know anything about my generation, we will do or say whatever it is we think we’re supposed to do or say. There is no conspiracy, just a slightly cozy, unthinking myopia. Don’t rock the boat.

The former editor of the New Scientist, Nigel Calder, said it best – if you want funding to study the feeding habits of squirrels, you won’t get it. If you wants to study the effects of climate change on the feeding habits of squirrels, you will. And so in these subtle ways, there is a gravitational pull towards the AGW monolith. (...) >>>

The same mechanism is work at the EU and the UN: Governments never send critics and dissenters to these institutions, but only true believers, creating self perpetuating, mutually affirming, monolithic hives group think.

Day 22 of Climategate/3 of COP15 and the warmist enthusiasts in Europe have dragged the new member states in the East into the fold, albeit kicking and screaming: having just shed one such artificial, parallel reality, they know a subjectivist narrative when they see one! The "pledge" of our taxpayer's money brought to you by the BBC:
"7.2 billion Euros over the next three years to a fund to help developing nations adapt to climate change. Announcing the deal, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said all 27 EU member nations would contribute." The pledge is more than the EU target of 6bn euros ($9bn; £5.5bn) by 2012. Mr Reinfeldt said the EU was taking its "fair share" and he hoped other rich nations would do the same. The deal may boost UN climate talks in Copenhagen. (...) >>>
From the Belgian postmodern wasteland a post I can't pass up, as it almost sublimely illustrates the present situation. Commenting on Climategate and how it is perceived from the Conservative angle, he's taking pot shots at biased Fox News, the populist Sarah Palin and the evil Wilders in the Netherlands.

The young "political scientist", rooted in the oxymoronic "social liberal" party, enjoys some schadenfreude in predicting Palin's bitter remorse, when - within the stretch of mere decades or so - hockey mums will have become a thing of the past as ice hockey reaches extinction (presumably on account of the scarcity of ice due to glowball warming). I'll spare you the rest of this warmist sooth-saying.

Not content with this display of intellectual dwarfism, citing Republican Congressman Sensenbrenner's demand that "scientific fascism must be stopped", he actually claims the qualification as a badge of honor! "If agreeing with the scientific consensus means being fascist, than so be it", he concludes. Is it any wonder this civilization's going down the drain?
  • Here's a good one! Mr Climate, Bjørn Lomborg, on COP15, Climategate and glowball warming (yes, he's still supporting it).
Grist, part of the Guardian Environment Network, is showing us once again what this is all about: ideology and winning. Truth (and with it science) is irrelevant!

Dec. 11, 2009

Day 21 in the Climategate era, day 4 of COP15 and an article on Pajamas, "Orwellian Nightmare: Science Is Whatever ‘the Party’ Says It Is" explains how postmodern thinking is destroying science. This insidious fallacy lies at the root of scandals like Climategate. Objective truth has been replaced by the truth of the day! And climate change is it, because political expediency dictates it.
Frank J. Tipler, Professor of Mathematical Physics at Tulane University: "I was told that 2 + 2 = 4 is merely a matter of opinion. I was told that Gödel showed mathematics could be inconsistent, so anything goes."

The parlor trick is this: the target is held to the highest standard and any discrepancy is evidence of its illegitimacy. Any contradiction in the truth of the day however is not evidence of error, but proof of the truth of subjectivism: anything goes!

This sophistry is rife in the humanities where it proliferates memes that corrupt society at the cultural level. But in science is goes to the root of the principle itself. What Immanuel Kant did to non-contradictory philosophy, these postmodernists do to science. The target: deligitimizing reason and the Enlightenment, the basis of the modern Western civilization.
WSJ says Climategate's just the tip of the iceberg, providing a strong example of CRU director Phil Jones' scientific mental makeup when he told Australian scientist Warwick Hughes in a 2005 email: "Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it." That's the whole point of the scientific method! Read all about Popper and the science of falsefiability.

Which beggars the question, how many Phil Jones' types have penetrated this climate circus? NASA behaved in a similar fashion, but scholar Christopher Horner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute is suing. "When it comes to questionable accounting, independent researchers cite the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its National Climate Data Center (NCDC) as the most egregious offenders." >>>
Some warmists are hell bent on pushing this through: "1,700 UK scientists back climate science" - okey, what's keeping ya? PROVE IT! "We have a consensus" no longer does the trick!
Roger Kimball on PJM has Al Gore on the couch (it was about time!). "Anatomy of an Apocalypse, Or: Al Gore Flunks Logic (and the Polygraph)": One of the curious features of megalomania is an inability to appreciate the disruptive force of countermanding facts. Were Al Gore a normal person — someone, I mean, who was not a slave to a mesmerizing ideology — the emails recently leaked from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University would have shaken him to the core. (...)

But rather than address the issue, Gore denies the significance of the revelation. Dickerson asks how damaging the emails were. Gore replies: “To paraphrase Shakespeare, it’s sound and fury signifying nothing. I haven’t read all the e-mails, but the most recent one is more than 10 years old.” Except, as an update to the interview points out, the most recent ones date from 2009. Asked about that inconvenient truth, Gore replied: “The e-mail exchanges that I focused on are approximately 10 years old. Some of the e-mail exchanges cited by others are more recent. None of them change the scientific consensus in any way.” (...) >>>

Day 20 of Climategate, day 3 of COP15: Claiming continued scientific responsibility negotiators, "displayed charts of data that said the current decade is on track to be the hottest on record for planet Earth". This may come as a surprise to real scientists, because they have evidence there was no warming at all the last 11 years.

David Solway writing on Pajamas compares it with the behavior of hamsters who suddenly find themselves trapped in a cage with a hungry snake. "The ensuing drama is instructive". Solway gives more prime examples.
  • Sen. Inhofe meanwhile discussed Climategate during the Heritage blogger briefing, saying it's the greatest scandal in modern science. We can't agree more.
The Daily Collegian: "PSU panel to review all 'Climategate' e-mails", by Laura Nichols

(...) While world leaders are spending the week in Copenhagen, Denmark, debating the best way to solve the global warming crisis, Penn State is still investigating if meteorology professor Michael Mann's research on the topic was ethical. A panel of personnel within the university is reviewing all of the e-mail correspondence between Mann and scientists at the University of East Anglia in England that was illegally leaked in November.

University spokeswoman Annemarie Mountz said Penn State officials are conducting the inquiry, which began last week, under policy RA-10. (...) More than $760 million in grants are given annually to research within Penn State, Mountz said. There will be no sanctions or restrictions placed on Mann or any grants during the inquiry. The university will also not be able to take any action or make any concrete determinations until the search has been completed, Mountz said. (...) >>>

Al Gore, the poet chimes in on CNN: it's that darned context thing again ... and it's all a misunderstanding, according to Gore. That seems to be the line today, that and confusion. Dec. 9, 2009

Day 19 of Climategate, day 2 of COP15 and UK's Guardian newspaper speaks of the "Copenhagen climate summit in disarray" after the leaking of a 'Danish text'. It would appear that developing countries have reacted furiously to a leaked draft agreement that would hand more power to rich nations, sideline the UN's negotiating role and abandon the Kyoto protocol. It may be that I'm just another cynical climate denier, clinging to borders, guns and individual liberty, but I fail to see how the loot not being administrated by the UN, would be a step backwards.

In the US meanwhile "Business Fumes Over Carbon Dioxide Rule" issued by the Environmental Protection Agency that marked CO2 a "public danger". CO2 is a gas we exhale, without it life would not be impossible, but it is now declared a pollutant! Gosh, Orwell really knew his Socialists, didn't he? The war on reality continues! Does the following sound familiar?
An EPA endangerment finding "could result in a top-down command-and-control regime that will choke off growth by adding new mandates to virtually every major construction and renovation project," U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue said in a statement.
Because Cap-and-Trade is not likely to pass Congress, it would seem the EPA action is calculated to give Obama something to show during COP15 on Dec. 18 and persuade the climate community that he is serious about cutting emissions.
  • An article in National Catholic Reporter on the leaked document, sketches the wild claims being made on the basis of "true science":
"If sea levels rise by one meter, at least 20 million Bangladeshis, of a total population about 150 million, would be affected. If Himalaya’s glaciers melt substantially due to global warming, the situation is dire.

“The population of our one coastal district is bigger than the entire population of all island countries and in that consideration at least 15 percent of any climate fund should come to us,” Bangladesh State Minister of Environment and Forests Hasan Mahmud told a news conference, according to Reuters. (...)"

"Also, the British Met Office, which is the United Kingdom's National Weather Service, today published station temperature records for over 1,500 of the stations that make up the global land surface temperature record. The data shows that global-average land temperatures have risen over the last 150 years and that global warming has increased since the 1970s (...) >>>

As we now know this same Met Office was poised to to re-examine 160 years of climate data on account of Climategate, until Gordon Brown intervened and called off the three year project, because that would inconvenience the COP15 agreement (see entry on Dec. 6). Update: More in this article in Telegraph by Gerald Warner.
Dec. 8, 2009

Day 18: Today the circus at COP15 goes ahead. Real progressive Europeans arrived in Copenhagen by ClimaTrain, but like the apparatchiks of Soviet years, world leaders are flown in in "dirty" jets, to be dispatched to the convention center in guzzling limousines. They've come together to "save the climate".

Eye witness reports say it's a regular circus: eco kitch all over the place, forests weren't spared to produce the giant placards pressing oiko responsible and sustainable products on the attendees. It's preaching to the choir. This is the priest cast of true belief in warmism.

Slogans such as in the photo, reveal their true intentions: the dialectic, enviro-version. Western culture - having produced longevity and prosperity in unsustainable quantities - must be phased out. Back to Rousseau, back with us to subsistence, a tribal life around the village green!

On to today's crop, first one last in, but of major importance:

! The Space Review: "How damaging is “Climategate” to NASA?", by Taylor Dinerman

(...) the stakes could hardly be bigger: a gigantic environmental catastrophe, or not, trillions of dollars, and a huge shift in global political power. (...) The Climategate controversy is doing long-term damage to the public’s respect for Science, with a capital S. NASA, as an agency whose mission is, in part, a scientific one, and which has been heavily involved in both the production and interpretation of earth science data, will inevitably suffer. Even worse, NASA has been using its considerable public outreach and information resources to present the AGW story as if it was fully settled science. (...)

The damage is not confined to NASA alone. As Dan Henninger wrote in the Wall Street Journal last week, “Hard science, alongside medicine was one of the few things left accorded automatic stature and respect by most untrained lay persons. But the average person reading accounts of the East Anglia emails will conclude that hard science has become just another faction, as politicized and ‘messy’ as, say, gender studies.” (...) Read it all >>>
  • Delingpole today is in the business of debunking Russia's "dirty oil" red herring ... designed both to impugn the motives of the people who leaked the CRU files and to distract from the significance of the files’ contents." He really gets it!

"We shall see a lot more of this in the coming weeks (...) So let’s not allow ourselves to be distracted and keep our eyes on the main prize: our right as free, sentient citizens not to have $45 trillion worth of economy-destroying taxes and regulations imposed on us by big government in the name of a problem that quite likely doesn’t exist. That’s why Climategate matters. Built into its outcome is the entire future of Western civilisation."

Yesterday we expressed feigned surprise - although data had been uploaded to computers in Russia and on the Arabian peninsula - Russia was singled out as a possible source for the Hadley hack on account of its "dirty" gas interests, but that Saudi Arabia as a major "dirty" oil supplier was ignored. Today it is reported that the Saudis are demanding an investigation. This is fun! "We think this is definitely going to affect the nature of what could be trusted in our deliberations", the Saudi Arabian negotiator said.
Here's again the IPCC central premise: that CO2 emissions by the year 2020 must be reduced by a figure somewhere in the realms of 25 to 40 percent if we want to avoid warming by 2 degrees Centigrade. If it does, floods, disasters and desertification will ensue in Biblical proportions. In the meantime start shifting $10 billion a year from rich to poor and we'll see later on if that figure must be adjusted to $100 billion or even $ 350 billion a year. All due to 200 years of "climate debt", you see? That, in a few words, is the core of this racket.

- Caption: COP15: "Assault of the Watermelons" (green coated reds) -

Our legs on the ground in Copenhagen is author Bruce Bawer. He has an initial report on this circus of waste on the site of PJM: "The Warming Faithful Gather in Copenhagen". Be sure to check in on PJM and Bawer's site with regular intervals over the coming two weeks that this fest of the counter-modern dialectic is going on. Part 2 deals with Scandinavian Jante Law, a Lutheran, deep-seated, guilt-ridden approach to life which must have many versions all over the Western world, and is utterly at odds with the American principles underlying Liberty and the unapologetic pursuit of happiness!
  • New Straits Times reports that ClimateGate has also penetrated the Obama Government. The best rebuttal top US negotiator, Jonathan Pershing has come up with, is a charge of "opportunism". They're confusing science with the mindless ideology that is putrifying the humanities! “It has sucked up all the oxygen,” said James Overland, an Arctic specialist with the the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in Copenhagen Monday to open a US-sponsored science centre.
Ah yes, and lest we forget - Apollo Alliance and Lisbon Council type alliances, cooptations of corporate, ideological and political entities - have formidable incentives to hang on to the scam. Triplepundit ("Adapting to a Changing Climate") have this Darwinian gem to contribute, giving the postmodern game away: “ClimateGate” is 95% engineered distraction by an unfortunate part of the business community who prefer kicking and screaming to evolution."

Evolution, you moronic pomoid, is a process of gradual change in the biology of living entities! It has nothing, not one single iota to do with innovation, fossil fuels, or your own perverted anti logic!
! American Thinker has a major article up, explaining how precisely "the decline was hidden" and what it means: "Understanding Climategate's Hidden Decline", by Marc Sheppard

Dec. 7, 2009

Day 17: Stop the Presses (again) ...

Times Online: "Climategate controversy has echoes of Watergate, UN says" - it's the Russian cabal with their dirty gas whodunnit! Heavens, these pocket potentates are predictable! Bets were being hedged since Day 1 how long that would take! The following is coming from Mr Climate, Achim Steiner, director of the UN Environment Program himself, repeating the disingenuous "hackergate" spin, urging their errant boys, the MSM, to investigate:
"This is not 'climategate' it's 'hackergate'. Let's not forget the word 'gate' refers to a place [Watergate] where data was stolen by people who were paid to do so. So the media should direct its investigations into that."
Although data from Hadley was uploaded to computers in Saudi Arabia as well as Russia, no one as yet has hit on "dirty oil".
The Times (boasting more climate correspondents than any other publication) and CNN have two conflicting reports that give away the racket! Get this:
The Met Office plans to re-examine 160 years of temperature data after admitting that public confidence in the science on man-made global warming has been shattered by leaked e-mails. The new analysis of the data will take three years, meaning that the Met Office will not be able to state with absolute confidence the extent of the warming trend until the end of 2012.

The Met Office database is one of three main sources of temperature data analysis on which the UN’s main climate change science body relies for its assessment that global warming is a serious danger to the world. This assessment is the basis for next week’s climate change talks in Copenhagen aimed at cutting CO2 emissions.

The Government is attempting to stop the Met Office from carrying out the re-examination, arguing that it would be seized upon by climate change sceptics. The Met Office works closely with the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) (...) >>>

In other words: this global heist is going ahead on the basis of ... what?! Suspect data, whacky science, and when one of the main sources proposes to check, the British Labor Government issue an ukazi not to, because that wouldn't be convenient! Indeed. Read it all >>>

Now let's turn to CNN (and mark the change in tone):
The UK's weather service, the Met Office is to publish station temperature records that make up the global land surface temperature record. Professor John Mitchell, director of climate science at the Met Office told CNN: "We are releasing the data to reassure people that climate data is sound." (...)

- Caption: SPPI's paper on ClimateGate by Lord Monckton - here available on Scridb -

But Professor Mitchell told CNN that he didn't see "any issue whatsoever with the soundness of global mean temperature records. (...) Professor Mitchell urged people who had become skeptical since the publication of the CRU emails to look at the evidence rather than "a selective take on emails which were stolen." (...)

In a separate statement Saturday, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown called on people to concentrate on securing a deal at the upcoming climate talks. Brown told the UK's The Guardian newspaper: "With only days to go before Copenhagen we mustn't be distracted by the behind the times anti-science, flat earth climate skeptics. We know the science. We know what we must do. We must act and close the five billion ton gap. That will seal the deal." (...) >>>

In other words: Gordon Brown has intervened. Far from the Met Office showing a scientific conscience by re-examining their data, they're now releasing it so as to conjure up the necessary "political will". The case is, climatism isn't science, it's ideology! Bamboozled again ... Hand over the figures, Gordo!
Words can't begin to describe the utter HYPOCRISY of these ideologues at the UN Politbureau! Remember yesterday's article in which NewsMax iterated COP15's giant carbon footprint? Here it is again:
"(...) 16,500 people from 192 countries will fly in using private jets, consume 200,000 meals, and produce an estimated 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide, roughly the same as the carbon emissions of Morocco in 2006."
All that, but a few Christmas decorations are too much for the pocket potentates! It fairly gives the game away again, doesn't it? Delingpole has the story ... "Climategate: how the Copenhagen Grinches stole Christmas" ...
  • Delingpole keeps being brilliant! He also has Richard North's Tiger Woods Index (TWI) of Internet popularity compared to the number of news report recorded. The ratio indicates what people are really interested in, as compared to what the MSM think they ought to be interested in. ClimateGate's on 1. with a ratio of 9693, far ahead of the runner up, Afghanistan which has a ratio of just 928.
A Times on Sunday poll meanwhile shows that public support is seriously dropping. Indeed, scepticism is so widespread that it undermines COP15 ... again, coming from a publication that has heftily invested in environmentalism.

Day 16: Yesterday we could report that the guys of PJTV's Poliwood, Roger Simon and Lionel Chetwynd, both members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, put out a statement on Thursday calling for the Academy to take back the Oscar for Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth"due to ClimateGate (FoxNews (AP), on Pajamas Media (do scroll down for some great comments). NewsMax chimes in and has calculated in passing COP15's giant carbon footprint:
"The academy members' request that Gore return his statue is happening as preparations are under way for next week's United Nations climate change meeting in Copenhagen, where 16,500 people from 192 countries will fly in using private jets, consume 200,000 meals, and produce an estimated 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide, roughly the same as the carbon emissions of Morocco in 2006."
! For ClimateGate reseachers: "East Anglia Confirmed Emails From the Climate Research Unit-Searchable"! All duckies neatly in a row over the period March 1996 upto the fateful day, 12 November 2009.

  • NewsBusters brings us some good news, exlaiming "Great Dane!" Thor Pederson, the Speaker of the Danish Parliament has issued a damning criticism of the climate debate, saying politicians gullibly turn theories into facts. The author comments:

"Given what has been exposed in ClimateGate, Pedersen is actually giving climate change scientists more of a break than they deserve. It's clear from the e-mails exposed that many of these scientists have made up their minds and have in many cases been pretending to know what they don't really know. Nonetheless, a Danish voice of dissent is quite welcome".

  • Dutch warmist watchdog De Klimatosoof has a post up illustrating the climatists' utter hypocrisy. A leaked email shows they lobbied "dirty oil" for funding and a strategic partnership to further their agenda. Indeed, all major oil companies these days sport "sustainability" and "corporate social responsibility" policies. One would hope this is good old opportunism, but they might as well have fallen prey to a form of "false consciousness" interfering with the bottom line.
  • The Media Research Center have an update on the MSM covering ClimateGate ... not. NewsBusters on the other hand report that C/Gate has finally made it to the Washington Post's top notch, but concludes: "If the objective of conservative media monitors is simply to open a space that forces liberals into a debate, this is a sign of success."

  • CNSNews have Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, the ranking Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, saying it is “dishonest” for Obama to attend the COP15 next week to announce that the US will cap its carbon emissions! Cap-and-Trade has no chance of passing Congress. Now that's a relief!

  • Those who have erroneously concluded that Al might be a wee bit timid in the face of the ClimateGate storm, had better think again. Wall Street Journal: Gore Roars! "Gore's answer to the scandal, then, seems to be to turn up the heat in the hope of drawing attention away from the light that the scandal has shed on the global warmists' abuses of science."

Day 15: Another shock! Elsevier has reported that the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is also implicated in the scam. Freely translated: "Enormous interests are caught up in climate research. Researchers are the recipients of great amounts of subsidies, power and reputation (...) making millions, based on their conclusions. In other words, it is quite conceivable that scientists, corporations, environmental organizations and sympathetic media are trying to cover up ClimateGate. (...) >>>

  • Whahaha - More light news, but this one may actually have some impact (hmm): the guys over on PJTV, Roger Simon and Lionel Chetwynd, both members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, put out a statement on Thursday calling for the Academy to take back the Oscar for Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" in light of the controversy dubbed ClimateGate: on FoxNews (AP), on Pajamas Media (do scroll down for some great comments).
Oh dear, stop the presses! AP science writer's actually on the case, but it's very confusing!
"House Republicans pointed to controversial e-mails leaked from climate scientists and said it was evidence of corruption. Top administration scientists looking at the same thing found no such sign, saying it doesn't change the fact that the world is warming."
But didn't they reframe "blowball warming" to "climate change" on account that it hasn't warmed for a decade? Words are meaningless to these people: really, they'll say anything! The article is very instructive and involves "science" Czar John Holdren.
  • The Washington Times in an editorial looks at global warming theology! C. Horner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute has filed a lawsuit against NASA, also implicated in the cover up. The editorial is also pointing out that ClimateGate can be seen as an academic Ponzi scheme, which works as long as everyone keeps investing and no one checks the books. But once the truth comes out the scheme begins to collapse. Quoting Nietzsche: "Their god, finally, is dead."

Day 14: FoxNews say, yes! Hell no, exclaims Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, never too cowed to contribute a jawdropping chutzpah ... "You call it 'Climategate'; I call it 'E-mail-theft-gate,'" she said yesterday during a committee meeting.
  • While the "scientist" at the heart of the furor - Phil Jones - "may have to take a rest", Hadley announced a wide-ranging probe into the allegations, which will be completed by next spring. The investigation will review the unit's policies and practices for disseminating data and research findings and subjecting them to peer review, as well as look at how it handled requests under Britain's Freedom of Information Act. Surely this self-investigation will return the same objective results as ClimateGate itself! Read it all in WSJ!
Fraser Nelson views the matter from the "eternal truth" perspective :

The Spectator: "Global warming: the truth"

Climate change has mutated from a debate into a catechism. With so much at stake, says Fraser Nelson, can we afford to dispense with rational argument?

(...) As the world leaders gather in Copenhagen to negotiate a successor to the Kyoto treaty it is unlikely the subject of these emails will be raised. This is not a forum for debate, but for the preaching of gospel. Already the head of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is hinting that the ‘fossil fuel lobby’ is responsible for the leaks — as if this made them any less damaging. They have hardly disproven global warming, but have exposed the way some scientists and academics see themselves on a crusade against the wicked deniers. Hysteria has taken the place of rational debate. (...) >>>

Day 13: IBD poses the moral issue. Why do the press from hell (or anyone else of those involved) see no evil on ClimateGate? The answer is simple: to postmodernists their "highly ethical" aim justifies any means. This mentality prompts the notion that they have a free pass on anything they do. The fact that the idea of science as a means to objective knowledge has practically been raped, means nothing to them: in the postmodern approach to reality, objectivity does not exist. Heck, to them science itself is nothing more than a subjective, Western narrative and as such a legitimate target for deconstruction. Given that constellation of thought, ClimateGate should come as no surprise. Postmodernism is a disaster waiting to happen.

Here's the latest alarming entry from Delingpole's desk:

Day 11 of Climategate: The first article is from an unsuspected source, the second comes from an insider. As the subtext of the Guardian article shows, as climatists have been manufacturing the evidence to fit the outcome, it should come as no surprise that even on this subject, they are engaged in psychological projection: they accuse sceptics of lying, obscuring and scamming. But it is them making claims of acid rain, ozon holes, and global warming (now reframed climate change). It is good scientific practice that the burden of proof is on those making claims. Deniers and skeptics are not required to do anything at all! Speaking of phonies!

And another matter: you don't reach scientific conclusions through consensus! A theory is either ruled out, or it is replaced by another. Concensus is convergence of opinion, the typical result of a specific kind of politics, postmodern politics!

Once again fact is confused with opinion! These people have never, ever taken the trouble to rule out any other hypothesis but their own pet pseudo religion: these aren't scientists, they're ideologs.

Frankly, the reactions that are now very slowly trickling in, prove that the eco crowd have truly taken leave of their sanity.

1. Paul Hudson, weather presenter and climate correspondent for the BBC has decided to sit on the Hadley information for a month or so while he's busy with his forecasting duties. He'll add comment on his page as soon as he can free up some time.

2. While one newspaper has figured the Dutch, upto the year 2020, will have to cough up some 20 billion Euros extra for energy just to reach "climate targets", the Minister for Eco Hysteria Cramer has condescendingly commented on the Hadley hack by attacking the messenger (hackers are criminals!), also charging the emails were published "selectively" and - surprise! - "taken out of context".

American Thinker: "CRU's Source Code: Climategate Uncovered", by Marc Sheppard

(...) One can only imagine the angst suffered daily by the co-conspirators, who knew full well that the “Documents” sub-folder of the CRU FOI2009 file contained more than enough probative program source code to unmask CRU’s phantom methodology.

In fact, there are hundreds of IDL and FORTRAN source files buried in dozens of subordinate sub-folders. And many do properly analyze and chart maximum latewood density (MXD), the growth parameter commonly utilized by CRU scientists as a temperature proxy, from raw or legitimately normalized data. Ah, but many do so much more.

Skimming through the often spaghetti-like code, the number of programs which subject the data to a mixed-bag of transformative and filtering routines is simply staggering. Granted, many of these “alterations” run from benign smoothing algorithms (e.g. omitting rogue outliers) to moderate infilling mechanisms (e.g. estimating missing station data from that of those closely surrounding). But many others fall into the precarious range between highly questionable (removing MXD data which demonstrate poor correlations with local temperature) to downright fraudulent (replacing MXD data entirely with measured data to reverse a disorderly trend-line). The World Meteorological Organization claims last years's CO2 emissions are the highest, EVER! Now Obama is ready to propose "targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions". $ 100 billion is well worth a few lies and decibels! As for an explanation for the compromizing documents, none.

Terence Corcoran brings up another problem: the unscientific, through and through politicized way in which the facts have been bent to fit the ideology, may cause outcry in the same anti modernist camp that this spells the end of science. The irony will come full circle: after Kant destroyed rationality through his fallacy of Pure Reason, it will be the True Science of the climatists that will mark the end of the epoch of Enlightenment. Report from recent radio interview with a MEP Green scientist-true believer:

The gist is as follows: if concrete targets are laid down in an addendum to the Copenhagen agreement instead of in the text of the treaty itself, Copenhagen must be considered a failure (apparently the targets then become so soft they aren't worth the paper they're written on). It's also important that the text of the agreement leaves the option to upgrade demands (basically moving the goalposts midplay).

Update on ClimateGate: BBC confirms that a hack did indeed occur. Is this smoking-gun evidence of global warming data being fabricated?

PJM: "Hacker Releases Data Implicating CRU in Global Warming Fraud (Updated)", by Charlie Martin

This is beginning to get some attention. Ace notices the same paragraph, and notes: “Keep in mind that when Jones wrote that in 1999 we hadn’t had a decade of global cooling yet. So perhaps he was obscuring a decline in the warming trend?”

It’s been picked up by Rush Limbaugh via American Thinker, and I’m hearing rumors that CNBC may be next. (...) >>>

The climate hoax appears to be finally unraveling! We know for a fact the MsM has been willfully exaggerating the case because they have been told that if they report "the truth" the public won't take glowball warming seriously! Well, perhaps some of them have been honestly misled; others may have been simply in the tank.

Three reports so far - Hat Tip: Tony Sharp

What happened? Britain’s Climate Research Unit at University of East Anglia suffered a data breach in recent days when a hacker broke into the computer system. The stolen data was posted on a Russian site. The documents show how the books were cooked. The hacking has been confirmed by the director of the research unit, Professor Phil Jones.

In an interview with the Atlantic in July, Nobel Prize winning economist Thomas Schelling was quoted:
I sometimes wish that we could have, over the next five or ten years, a lot of horrid things happening — you know, like tornadoes in the Midwest and so forth — that would get people very concerned about climate change.
And what better way is there to get people excited about global warming than to hope they perish in Katrina-like natural disasters? Al Gore, Paul Krugman, Thomas Schelling…maybe this Nobel Prize thing isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Bravo Mr. Schelling, bravo. >>>

Oops! climate just disappeared into black hole

BBC: "What happened to global warming?"

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998. But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures. And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

So what on Earth is going on? Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man's influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming. They argue that there are natural cycles, over which we have no control, that dictate how warm the planet is. But what is the evidence for this? (...) >>>

That would be the San Joaquin Valley in California, one of the most prolific agricultural areas in the country — or at least it was, until environmentalists turned off the water. Did they need it for people in response to the drought? No, because the water that would normally flow to the SJV is getting directed out to sea instead. American Spectator: "Scientific fraud"

(...) I say this because it was a month ago today that I began broadcasting in those fora that the UN's IPCC -- the "scientific body" to which Obama's EPA outsourced its decision as to whether Man-made carbon dioxide (plant food) poses an "endangerment" to the planet (really) -- has openly admitted for more than a decade that it "does not conduct any research nor does it monitor climate related data or parameters" (cached here).

Apparently someone finally decided that keeping this admission out there wasn't going to help the agenda (is there another possible reading?). So, they lied. Sometime in the past three weeks, someone at the UN IPCC reinvented the group. Now, its web page states instead of the long-acknowledged truth, the falsehood that "The IPCC is a scientific body."

Well, no, it isn't, and changing a website can't change that fact. (Hint: its "chief scientist" and "chief climatologist", depending on which profile of him you read, is actually an economist and longtime UN functionary. Close enough for supragovernmental work). But, possibly this group funded in great part with U.S. taxpayer dollars might tell us when and how did this mission creep occur? (...)>>>

Beck directed attention to the Alliance’s self-admitted role in February 2009 of having influenced “specific content of many of the [stimulus] bill’s provisions.” The Alliance also claims “policy proposals” originated last year in its The New Apollo Program and the Apollo Economic Recovery Act.

In the same Alliance news item, Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, is quoted as saying “We’ve talked about moving forward on these ideas for decades. The Apollo Alliance has been an important factor in helping us develop and execute a strategy that makes great progress on these goals and in motivating the public to support them.”

What neither the Alliance or Reid makes clear is who the “we” is who has talked about “moving forward on these ideas for decades.” (...) >>>

Key ... here's the blueprint of the great transnational heist! Ever frantically wondered where the speudo religion of environmentalism is for. Well, it's the good old dialectic that never fails to give: a justification to spread ..... (fill: wealth, power, rights) around. Given that it's usually done in a setting hosted by the "international" (read transnational) community, means that it's under the radar of national democratic checks and balances (talk of a coup!):

NewsReal: "Hide Your Money, the Africans are Coming!"

This December, as Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! tells us, a Climate Summit will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The purpose of this summit will be to renew the Kyoto Climate Treaty Against Global Warming (Kyoto Protocol), which went into effect in 2005 (the United States was not a signatory to that treaty). At the Copenhagen Summit, a group of African nations, led by Ethiopia, will make an extraordinary demand of the West.

The Africans, Goodman reports, are going to demand $67 billion per year from Western developed nations (read: “the United States”) as reparations for the “devastating effects of climate change on the African continent.”

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi frames the situation as follows:

Africa is going to need development assistance perhaps more so than in the past given the more hostile global economic environment that appears to be emerged. The international community needs to take urgent steps to limit global warming to about 2 degrees Celsius, which is going to hit Africa first and hit it hard. The most effective means of adapting to climate change is growth and transformation of Africa’s economy that needs funds from the international community. (...)>>>

The American Spectator: "The Oil Shortage Hoax", by Ben Stein FEATURE

There was a staggeringly important article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Briefly, it said that the immense run up in oil prices in 2008, from roughly $33 a barrel to roughly $150 per barrel was not caused by an oil shortage, was not caused by an immense upsurge in demand from China and India and Brazil, not caused by bandits in Nigeria. This finding was from President Obama's Commodity Futures Trading Commission, hardly a mouthpiece of Big Oil. The staggering 2008 run up in price, which beggared hundreds of millions of people throughout the world, was caused by the sinister machinations of a few dozen oil traders and speculators in the commodity pits and lush offices of hedge funds and investment banks. (Think Goldman, Sachs at its worst.)

The shortage, which terrified innocent people and literally killed the U.S. automotive industry, made a few dozen or maybe a few hundred people very rich. It also made the nation believe we actually faced a major oil shortage. (I was briefly taken in before I realized that nothing in the supply demand situation had changed even remotely enough to justify the kind of price moon shot we had been through. When I wrote that the spike was the work of some oil speculators and I knew their names, one of them sent me threatening e-mails.)

This belief -- that we faced an impending end of the supply of oil -- was a huge part of the motivation to turn to "green power" sources like wind and solar, to look for ways, even quite radical ways, to control energy use. This totally fraudulent "fact" of rapidly depleting oil resources helped Mr. Barack Obama get elected and is now helping him get his radical cap and trade and energy control bill through Congress. This bill, largely turning U.S. energy production and use upside down and saddling the nation with innumerable regulations -- down to small details like having federal regulators mark up or down every home up for resale based on every usage -- was based upon a fraud. CNSNews: "White House Science Adviser Advocated 'De-Development' of the United States", by Christopher Neefus - Hat Tip: Michael O'Flaherty

President Obama’s top science adviser, John P. Holdren, advocated the "de-development" of the United States in books he published in the 1970s. "A massive campaign must be launched to restore a high-quality environment in North America and to de-develop the United States," Holdren wrote in a 1973 book he co-authored with Paul R. Ehrlch and Anne H. Ehrlich. "De-development means bringing our economic system (especially patterns of consumption) into line with the realities of ecology and the global resource situation."

In the vision expressed by Holdren and his co-authors, the Ehrlichs, the need for "de-development" of the United States demanded a redistribtuion of wealth. (...) Holdren, who is director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, made these comments in the 1973 book "Human Ecology," which he co-authored with the Ehrlichs, long-time advocates of curtailing population growth. Over the years, Holdren has co-authored or co-edited a number of books and articles with Paul Ehrlich.

In the 1977 science textbook, "Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment," which Holdren also co-authored with the Ehrlichs, the authors again presented their idea for "de-development." (...) “It is therefore apparent,” they said, “that one key to saving world society lies in a measured and orderly retreat from overdevelopment in today’s ODCs (overdeveloped countries)--a process we will label, for want of a better word, de-development.” (...) the authors lamented that some scientists and engineers, who they labeled “technologists,” would reject their idea of de-developing countries like the United States:

“Angry opposition to de-development can be expected from some technologists who are used to having their schemes for progress accepted without question by a dazzled public," the authors wrote. "SSTs (solid state technologies), space colonies, thermonuclear weapons and delivery systems, geodesic domes over cities, fission power, giant automobiles, plastic wrappings, genetic engineering, disposable packages and containers, synthetic pesticides, and the like are supposed to be accepted as self-evidently desirable.” (...)

In addition to being director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Holdren is also President Obama’s top science adviser. He is a major voice in the administration on both climate-change policy and health care reform. According to the 1976 bill that created the OSTP, it is meant to “serve as a source of scientific and technological analysis and judgment for the President with respect to any major policies, plans, and programs of the Federal government.”

Before joining the Obama administration, Holdren was a professor at Harvard and the director of the Woods Hole Research Center in Falmouth, Mass. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and an M.S. from MIT, where he also received his undergraduate degree. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy did not comment on questions from about Holdren’s stance on de-development or whether it has changed since the 1970s. >>>

Climate Depot: "Gore: U.S. Climate Bill Will Help Bring About 'Global Governance'"

Former Vice President Al Gore declared that the Congressional climate bill will help bring about “global governance.” “I bring you good news from the U.S., “Gore said on July 7, 2009 in Oxford at the Smith School World Forum on Enterprise and the Environment, sponsored by UK Times.
“Just two weeks ago, the House of Representatives passed the Waxman-Markey climate bill,” Gore said, noting it was “very much a step in the right direction.” President Obama has pushed for the passage of the bill in the Senate and attended a G8 summit this week where he agreed to attempt to keep the Earth's temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C.

Gore touted the Congressional climate bill, claiming it “will dramatically increase the prospects for success” in combating what he sees as the “crisis” of man-made global warming.
“But it is the awareness itself that will drive the change and one of the ways it will drive the change is through global governance and global agreements.” (Editor's Note: Gore makes the “global governance” comment at the 1min. 10 sec. mark in this UK Times video.) (...) >>>

Mark Musser over on AIM has done a great job in reducing the roots of environmentalism back to Nazism. But we can retrace the source even further than that: back to the anti modernist roots of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose anti civilization, anti capitalist and anti human ideas form the basis of all Postmodern thought, a branch of anti philosophy to which Socialism, Nazism and environmentalism (and multiculturalism) all belong (the school of subjective relativism, to be precise).

At a July meeting in St. Petersburg, the commission said developed countries "should think of decreasing current consumption levels" - which would mean shrinking their economies - in order to help the environment. Read the words of EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstroem and former French President Jacques Chirac: Many global warming advocates see Kyoto and other treaties as instruments of international power politics. Ultimately, they seek to give activists and centralized government entities more say over fossil fuel use, economic growth, lifestyles, housing and transportation. EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstroem says Kyoto "is not a simple environmental issue, where you can say scientists are not unanimous. This is about international relations, this is about the economy, about trying to create a level playing field for big businesses throughout the world. You may be excused for not having noticed, but 2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved. This is of utmost importance as man's culpability in the 'destruction of the planet' is the main lever in the devaluation of mankind ...

Daily Telegraph: "2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved"

Looking back over my columns of the past 12 months, one of their major themes was neatly encapsulated by two recent items from The Daily Telegraph. The first, on May 21, headed"Climate change threat to Alpine ski resorts" , reported that the entire Alpine "winter sports industry" could soon "grind to a halt for lack of snow". The second, on December 19, headed"The Alps have best snow conditions in a generation" , reported that this winter's Alpine snowfalls "look set to beat all records by New Year's Day".
Easily one of the most important stories of 2008 has been all the evidence suggesting that this may be looked back on as the year when there was a turning point in the great worldwide panic over man-made global warming. (...) First, all over the world, temperatures have been dropping in a way wholly unpredicted by all those computer models which have been used as the main drivers of the scare. (...) Secondly, 2008 was the year when any pretence that there was a "scientific consensus" in favour of man-made global warming collapsed. (...) Thirdly, as banks collapsed and the global economy plunged into its worst recession for decades, harsh reality at last began to break in on those self-deluding dreams which have for so long possessed almost every politician in the western world.

As we saw in this month's Poznan conference, when 10,000 politicians, officials and "environmentalists" gathered to plan next year's "son of Kyoto" treaty in Copenhagen, panicking politicians are waking up to the fact that the world can no longer afford all those quixotic schemes for "combating climate change" with which they were so happy to indulge themselves in more comfortable times. NewsMax: "Expert Claims McCain Is Wrong on Global Warming" (received by email)

A British editor and politician prominent in the discussion of climate change has written an open letter to John McCain criticizing statements the Republican candidate has made about global warming. The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, who was an adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, sought to keep Al Gore’s global warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” out of public schools in Britain, and in March 2007 challenged Gore to a debate on climate change. Now in his letter to McCain, published on the Web site American Thinker, Monckton calls manmade global warming fears “scientifically discredited” and advises, “Not for a single moment longer must you allow yourself to be distracted by the murderous foolishness of the climate alarmists.”

Monckton quotes a McCain statement that “we need to deal with the central facts of rising temperatures.” Monckton, saying he bases his assertions on “peer-reviewed scientific literature,” counters, “For most of the past 600 million years, the temperature that most often prevailed globally is thought to have been 12.5 degrees higher than today’s temperature . . . “From 1700 to 1998, temperature rose at a near-uniform rate of about 1 degree per century. In 1998, ‘global warming’ stopped, and it has not resumed since. Indeed, in the past seven years, temperature has been falling at a rate equivalent to as much as 0.7 degrees per decade.” Responding to McCain’s statement that greenhouse gases, chiefly carbon dioxide, “are heavily implicated as a cause of climate change,” Monckton writes, “Two-thirds of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is naturally present, and carbon dioxide occupies just one ten-thousandth more of the atmosphere today than it did 250 years ago.”

Monckton, who was an editor and writer with Britain’s Evening Standard newspaper, quotes McCain, “We need to deal with the central facts of . . . rising waters.” He counters, “Sea level has been rising since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago . . . The rate of increase has averaged four feet per century. Yet in the 20th century, when we are told that ‘global warming’ began to have a major impact on global temperature and hence on sea level, sea level rose by just eight inches.” Then in a swipe at Al Gore, whom he does not mention by name, Monckton observes, “There is not and has never been any scientific basis for the exaggerated projections by a certain politician that sea level might imminently rise by as much as 20 feet. “That politician, in the year in which he circulated a movie containing that projection, bought a $4 million condominium just feet from the ocean at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.”

Monckton also seeks to refute statements McCain has made on receding glaciers, melting polar ice sheets, extreme weather events, threats to polar bears, and more. And in reference to the candidate’s stated support for efforts to control climate change by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, Monckton tells McCain: "With every respect, there is no rational basis for your declared intention that your great nation should inflict upon her own working people and upon the starving masses of the Third World the extravagantly pointless, climatically irrelevant, strategically fatal economic wounds that the arrogant advocates of atmospheric alarmism admit they aim to achieve.”

Sir David King, the former chief scientist, recently told the FT that GM crops held the key to solving the food price crisis and Nestlé has urged the European Union to review its opposition to GM.
While environmentalists rushed to the prince’s defence, there was a backlash from politicians, academics and industry figures. Phil Willis, chairman of the Commons science committee, said the use of science in farming had helped feed billions of people. “His lack of scientific understanding and his willingness to condemn millions of people to starvation in areas like sub-Saharan Africa is absolutely bewildering.” (...) >>>

BBC: "Huge boost for lowland gorillas "

A census of critically endangered western lowland gorillas has shown that populations are doing much better than anyone expected. The census found 125,000 of the apes alive and well in two adjacent areas in the northern part of the Republic of Congo covering 47,000 sq km. A census in the 1980s estimated that about 100,000 remained, but numbers were since thought to have halved. Hunting and the ebola virus was thought to have slashed population numbers. The census data were released by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) during the International Primatological Society Congress in Edinburgh, UK. (...) In all, the researchers estimated a total of 125,000 gorillas in just this northern Congo area. (...) "we had no idea there were so many," said Dr Emma Stokes, who led the survey efforts in Ndoki-Likouala. (...) >>>

The Liberty Blog: "The Danger of Politics in Climate Science"

I have been reading an interesting book written about climate scientists who dissent from the catastrophic, anthropogenic-caused view on global warming. The book is called “The Deniers” and it is written by Lawrence Solomon, who is not a “denier” himself. Like myself, he is an environmental scientist concerned with the fact that politics have become so involved in a scientific issue. After all, it was not scientists who started global warming hysteria, but politicians. He sets out in his book to dispel the popular notion that the science is settled, and show the dangers of allowing politics to play a role in science. (...)

“Kyoto is not an insurance policy. Just the opposite, it is the single, greatest threat today to the global environment, because it makes carbon into currency. Carbon is the element upon which all living things are built. With carbon a kind of currency – which is what all carbon taxes and carbon trading and similar schemes do – all ecosystems suddenly have a commercial value that makes them subject to manipulation for gain. This is not some abstract theoretical concern. We are already seeing environmental havoc from the new economic order that Kyoto has spawned (...) >>>

But with no significant increase in global temperatures for the past ten years or so, and atmospheric monitoring failing to find any evidence of the much-vaunted ‘greenhouse signature,’ what used to be a steady stream of apocalyptic stories emanating from the newsrooms has all but dried up, and the job of trying to persuade us that the threat from global warming is real is increasingly being left to the entertainment divisions of the mass media. EURSOC: "A Place In The Sun"

The European Commission's Institute for Energy is studying proposals to build "solar farms" covering an area the size of Wales in the Sahara and Middle Eastern deserts, claiming that 0.3 percent of light falling on these regions could provide the EU with all its energy needs. The scheme has the backing of Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy, it is reported. Combined with "EU windfarms" in the North and Baltic Seas, the continents energy needs could be met with natural energy alone: Some nations, like Britain and Denmark, could export power to needy countries further south. It is costed at just under £36 billion (€45.5bn) and would involve laying cables under the sea between Morocco and Spain and Sicily and Tunisia.

The "daunting" costs reported in the Guardian also include restructuring the entire infrastructures of "transfer" nations such as Greece and Turkey. (...) "Scientists working on the project admit that it would take many years and huge investment to generate enough solar energy from north Africa to power Europe but envisage that by 2050 it could produce 100 GW, more than the combined electricity output from all sources in the UK, with an investment of around €450bn", reports the Guardian. >>>

Pajamas Media: "World’s Scariest Words: ‘I’m an Environmentalist and I’m Here to Help,’" by Mary Madigan

(...) These films are just the latest, and least harmful, illustration of the fact that the environmentalist movement is a road to hell paved with good intentions. Yes, their goals sound noble — they want to preserve the wild spaces, clean up the oceans, save endangered species. But their actions often create more harm than good. Much of the modern environmental movement was inspired by Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring. Anti-corporate, anti-globalist, pro-ecology campaigns usually follow the formula established by the activist opposition to DDT.

1. Gather evidence that some form of human activity is having an effect on the environment. In Silent Spring, it was the effect DDT was having on bird’s eggs.
2. Emphasize (...) >>>

Prague Daily Monitor: "Klaus slams US candidates' views on climate"

The stances on global warming presented by all candidates for the U.S. president are "sad and tragic," Czech President Vaclav Klaus told Czech journalists on Tuesday after presenting the English edition of his book "Blue Planet in Green Shackles." "I am horrified by this because the future of the Planet horrifies me," Klaus said, referring to the candidates' pledges to fight global warming. (...)

Klaus repeatedly warned in Washington about "environmentalism and especially in its strongest version, climate alarmism" during the presentation of his book, issued by the Competitive Enterprise Institute. He said environmentalists believe that "they have the right to sacrifice man and his freedom to make their idea reality." (...) >>>

Le Québécois Libre: "Suzuki would jail Climate Skeptics", by Bradley Doucet

The science of global warming is settled, thinks Canadian celebrity and one-time scientist David Suzuki – and if you disagree, you can go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Okay, I'm exaggerating just a little. Suzuki only said that politicians who disagree with the "consensus" science should go to jail. Suzuki was giving a speech at McGill University in Montreal recently when he raised the ugly spectre of imprisonment for climate skeptics. (...) >>>

Prague Daily Monitor: "Klaus warns against global warming panic again"

Global warming alarmism is marching on," Czech President Vaclav Klaus said in his speech at an international conference on climate held by the conservative Heartland Institute in New York Tuesday. "We have to therefore concentrate not only on adding new arguments to the already existing ones, but also on the winning of additional supporters of our views," Klaus added. (...) "The insurmountable problem as I see it lies in the political populism of its exponents and in their unwillingness to listen to arguments...
